A9 Tomatin and Moy | Temporary Average Speed Cameras To Commence Enforcement
Temporary average speed cameras will begin enforcing on the A9 on the 1st July to help ensure safety while dualling work continues between Tomatin and Moy.
To help protect road users and road workers, Police Scotland Safety Cameras will begin enforcing the 40mph temporary speed restrictions implemented to undertake the works to dual the A9 between Tomatin and Moy. The cameras will be operational until the new dualled section is complete, expected in Spring 2028.
The temporary average speed cameras will be operational 24 hours a day 7 days a week. Signage is in place reminding motorists of the temporary speed restrictions and that average speed cameras are enforcing.
Temporary average speed cameras are shown to control speeds over a greater distance in areas of roadworks, reducing heavy braking and acceleration, and in turn improving road safety. At major roadwork sites the road layout and temporary surfaces can change regularly, so it’s critical that motorists drive at a safe speed. Those most at risk in the event of a collision at these locations are the road workers as they have no protective shield to absorb energy from the impact.
Inspector Donnie Mackinnon of the Highland and Islands Road Policing Unit says: ‘It’s absolutely vital that road users remain vigilant and react to the surroundings, especially in areas of roadworks which contain reduced speed limits and where workers are present. Please plan ahead, be patient and use the road space responsibly with due consideration for others. Those who fail to comply with road traffic legislation run the risk of being prosecuted so please think and drive carefully.”
Eric Dunion, Manager Police Scotland Safety Cameras says: ‘The reduced speed limit in place through the roadworks on the A9 may increase the journey time however, these measures are in place for the safety of road users and the work force. By installing an average speed camera system we are looking at drivers to modify their behaviour and adhere to the speed limits in place or face the consequences.’
