A725 Shawhead and Raith Junctions | Overnight Closures

Road users are advised that the A725 southbound carriageway between Shawhead Junction (North Road) and Raith Junction roundabout (near Bothwell), will be closed overnight, from 8pm to 6am, for two consecutive nights from Tuesday 22 July 2025 for carriageway surface repairs and cyclic maintenance works.


The works are planned to be undertaken in two separate phases as follows:


Phase 1 – Tuesday 22 July 2024 (1 night)


The A725 southbound carriageway will be closed overnight between Shawhead Junction (North Road) and Bellziehill Junction (Gartcosh Walk) off slip road.


As a result, the following slip roads will also be closed:


· M8 westbound Junction 7A Shawhead off slip road for A725 southbound

· A725 southbound Diamond Junction (James Street) off slip road

· A725 southbound Diamond Junction (James Street) on slip road

· A725 southbound Bellziehill Junction off slip road


Signed diversion routes will be in place for both motorway and non-motorway traffic as follows:


Diversion 1: M8 westbound Junction 7A Shawhead link road to A725 southbound closure for M74, A725 Bellshill & East Kilbride via M8 westbound to Junction 8 Baillieston off slip road, take 1st exit on Baillieston roundabout for M73 southbound Junction 2 Baillieston on slip road, continue M73 southbound and link road to M74 southbound at Junction 1 Maryville, continue M74 southbound for Carlisle, or leave M74 southbound at Junction 5 Raith off slip and follow permanent signage for A725 Bellshill, East Kilbridge & Strathclyde Country Park.

 

Diversion 2: A725 southbound closure at Shawhead Junction (North Road) for M74, Bellshill, Uddingston & East Kilbridge via A7070 North Road, A721 Gartcosh Walk and continue to Uddingston or return to A725 southbound at Bellziehill Junction roundabout and follow permanent signage for M74 & East Kilbride.

 

Diversion 3: A725 southbound closure at Shawhead Junction (North Road) for access to Bellshill North Industrial Estate/ Righead Industrial Estate/ Strathclyde Business Park (Hilton Hotel) via A7070 North Road, A721 Gartcosh Walk, Belgrave Street (Bellshill Ind Est), James Street (Righead Ind Est) and Swift Way (Strathclyde Business Park & Hilton Hotel).


Diversion 4: M8 westbound Junction 7A Shawhead link road to A725 southbound closure for A725 Bellshill/ Bellshill North Industrial Estate/ Righead Industrial Estate/ Strathclyde Business Park (Hilton Hotel) via M8 westbound to Junction 8 Baillieston off slip road, take 2nd exit on Baillieston roundabout, A8 (M) westbound Glasgow & Edinburgh Road to Swinton roundabout, take 3rd exit for A8 eastbound Coatbridge Road to A8 Bargeddie roundabout, take 2nd exit for A8 eastbound and A8 eastbound Shawhead Junction off slip road, A725 southbound for North Road and follow Diversion 3 above.


Local diversion signs will also be in place.


Phase 2 – Wednesday 23 July 2025 (1 night)


The A725 southbound carriageway will be closed overnight between Bellziehill Junction (Gartcosh Walk) on slip road and Raith Junction roundabout.


As a result, the following link road and slip roads will also be closed:


· A725 southbound Bellziehill Junction on slip road

· A725 southbound Orbiston Junction off slip road

· A725 southbound Orbiston Junction on slip road

· A725 southbound Raith Junction off slip road to Raith roundabout at Strathclyde Country Park


Signed diversion routes will be in place for both motorway and non-motorway traffic as follows:


Diversion 1: M8 westbound traffic approaching Junction 7A Shawhead off slip for access to M74/ A725 East Kilbridge or Strathclyde Country Park, continue M8 westbound to Junction 8 Baillieston off slip road and Baillieston roundabout, take 1st exit for M73 southbound link road to M74 southbound at Junction 1 Maryville, continue M74 southbound for The South & Carlisle, or leave M74 at Junction 5 Raith off slip and follow permanent signage for Strathclyde Country Park, Bothwell & A725 (Bellshill/East Kilbride).


Diversion 2: A725 southbound closure at Bellziehill Junction for A725 East Kilbridge/ M74 North & South and Strathclyde Country Park, via A725 southbound off slip road for Bellziehill roundabout, take 3rd exit for A721 New Edinburgh Road, B7071 Glasgow Road & Main Street Uddingston, continue B7071 Main Street & Hamilton Road Bothwell, A7071 Bellshill Road and follow permanent signage for M74/ A725 Raith roundabout/ Strathclyde Country Park and East Kilbridge. For Orbiston Bellshill take A725 northbound from Raith roundabout to Orbiston Junction off slip road and avoid low rail bridge (4.3m/14’3’’) at Bellshill Town Centre.


Local diversions will also be in place.


The diversion route will add an estimated 6 miles and 6 minutes to affected journeys on the M8 westbound from Shawhead via Baillieston Interchange to M73 southbound to M74 southbound to Raith Interchange.


Road users are encouraged to plan ahead and check Traffic Scotland’s website prior to travelling to check their route. Access for active Emergency Service vehicles will be maintained.

The closures are required to ensure road user and road worker safety whilst essential carriageway surface repairs & cyclic works and have been scheduled overnight to minimise disruption to traffic. The road will reopen at 6am each morning.

The works will be carried out by Scottish Road Partnership on behalf of Transport Scotland to maintain the integrity and safety of this route. The works have been planned in consultation with Transport Scotland, North Lanarkshire Council, South Lanarkshire Council, Amey South West Unit and the emergency services.
