A1 Near Thorntonloch | Diesel Spill

Thorntonloch
17th of March 2026, 5:35pm to 18th of March 2026, 5:00pm

The A1 near Thorntonloch has reopened under temporary traffic lights after it was closed by Police Scotland following a road traffic incident involving an HGV earlier today.

The traffic lights are expected to remain in place overnight while work to remove a diesel spill is completed.

Tommy Deans, BEAR Scotland’s South East Network Manager, explained: “It’s essential that we clear up spilled diesel before reopening the carriageway, for the safety of road users and because it acts as a solvent on the concrete road surface.

“We appreciate that this incident has caused delays for road users and our team is working hard to get the road reopened as quickly as possible. Specialist materials will be used to soak up the diesel overnight, and we’ll be back on site early tomorrow morning to assess if it can be completely reopened.

“We thank motorists for their patience. Emergency closures always present challenges.”
