Further details of the elite road routes that cyclists will compete across at this year’s UCI Cycling World Championships have been unveiled.
This announcement builds on the initial overview of road route announced last September at the 2022 UCI Road World Championships in Wollongong, Australia, and includes new details and full routes for the Men, Women and Under 23 Road Races, plus Men, Women, Men Under 23 and Junior Individual and Mixed Time Trials.
Today’s announcement also unveils the first details of the route for Para-cycling Road Championships that will take place in Dumfries and Galloway, including the Para-Road Race, Individual Time Trial and Team Relay.
Throughout these events, the world’s best cyclists will savour some of Scotland’s most spectacular scenery, with racing taking place across the country. The Men’s Road route takes in Edinburgh Castle and Arthur’s Seat from its start in the capital on Sunday 6 August, before heading north across the Firth of Forth via the iconic Queensferry Crossing, then heading west through Fife towards Clackmannanshire, Falkirk and Stirling, passing world-renowned landmarks including the Kelpies, the Falkirk Wheel, Carron Valley and the Crow Road, before turning towards Glasgow and the specially devised finishing circuit, looping through the west end to the city centre for a spectacular finish in George Square.
The Women’s and Under 23’s races will also finish on the central Glasgow circuit, though starting on the bonnie banks of Loch Lomond at Balloch, weaving through West and East Dunbartonshire en route to the finish line in George Square. The Men Under 23 takes place on Saturday 12 August with the Women Elite Road Race, which includes the Women Under 23 category, closing this inaugural and history making competition on Sunday 13 August.
In addition, the Men and Women’s Junior Road races and the Team Time Trial Mixed Relay will take place on the Glasgow Circuit on Saturday 5 August and Tuesday 8 August respectively.
Stirling and its surrounding areas will host the Individual Time Trials for Elite Men, Elite Women, Men Under 23’s, and Men and Women Juniors, with competition beginning on Wednesday 9 August and racing ongoing across three days until Friday 11 August. Event routes will set off from the King and Queens Knott in the shadow of Stirling Castle on a course that takes them fast, through the flats of the river Forth and out in looping routes across the country, before looping back towards Stirling town Centre, and finishing on Stirling Castle esplanade.
In Dumfries and Galloway, the Para-cycling Roads will see athletes competing on single bikes, tandems, tricycles and hand-cycles for the World Championship titles across the varied Para-cycling disciplines, with competition running between Wednesday 9 and Sunday 12 August, beginning and ending in Dumfries on a specially designed course which makes the most of the areas renowned cycling terrain. Teams will then travel to Glasgow for the Team Relay, which will take place on Sunday 13 August on the city centre circuit.
