Package of improvement works on the M8 between junctions 15 and 22 commences Monday 20th February

Amey, on behalf of Transport Scotland, are undertaking a package of improvements on the M8 between Junctions 15 (Townhead) and 22 (Plantation) from Monday 20th February until Friday 14th April 2023.  
 
Improvements will take place overnight on both the eastbound and westbound carriageways of the M8 and the programme of work includes:  
 
•    M8 Charing Cross Wall Panel Refurbishments 
•    M8 Charing Cross Drainage Investigations 
•    M8 Great Western Road Overbridge Joint Replacements and Resurfacing 
•    M8 St. Georges Road Overbridge 150m of Bridge Parapet Replacement 
•    M8 Junction 17 – 16 Gantry Re-erection 
•    M8 Junction 15 High Mast Lighting Replacements 
 
This package of maintenance will benefit vehicles using this route each day, by improving the condition of the carriageway and reducing the need for more extensive maintenance in the future. Various works will be undertaken within the same traffic management configuration to minimise disruption to the travelling public. All diversion routes will be signed.  
 
 
M8 Eastbound Works 
 
Phase One of works on the M8 eastbound will commence on Monday 20th February and will run until Friday 10th March 2023. Work will take place Monday to Friday between the hours of 10pm and 6am, each night with a closure required from Junction 18, Charing Cross to Junction 16 at the turn for Dobbie’s Loan. Traffic will be diverted to exit the M8 eastbound at Junction 18 and will bear left to join St. Georges Road. From here, traffic will turn right to travel in a northerly direction and will take a further right turn onto the A81, Garscube Road. Traffic will then turn left onto the A804, Dobbie’s Loan and will take a further left then right turn to re-join the M8 eastbound via the Junction 16 on-slip road. 
  
The M8 Junction 18 eastbound on-slip road at Charing Cross will be closed with traffic instructed to follow the above diversion route.  
 
In addition, the Junction 19 Anderston on-slip road will be closed with traffic instructed to continue on the A804, St. Georges Road before following the above diversion route.  
 
Phase Two of eastbound works will take place from Sunday 12th March until Sunday 26th March 2023 where there will be a closure of the M8 eastbound at Junction 22 (M74) through to Junction 16, Dobbie’s Loan. The closure will be in place seven nights a week between the hours of 10am and 6am, each night. Traffic will be instructed on M74 southbound to exit at Junction 1, Kinning Park, off-slip road and will turn right onto Paisley Road West. Traffic will continue through Kingston Street before turning left onto King George V Bridge and will take a further left onto Broomielaw. From here, traffic will turn right onto the A804, North Street and will proceed along St. Georges Road to take a further right turn onto the A81, Garscube Road. Traffic will then turn left onto the A804, Dobbie’s Loan and will take a left and right turn to re-join the M8 eastbound via the Junction 16 on-slip road.  
 
During this period, the M77 northbound ramp that joins the M8 eastbound will be closed and traffic will join the M74 southbound before following the above diversion.  
 
The Junction 19 Anderston on-slip and the Junction 18 Charing Cross on-slip roads will also remain closed with traffic to follow the diversion route as detailed in Phase One.  
 
Phase Three of eastbound works will take place from Monday 27th March until Friday 14th April 2023 during the hours of 10am and 6am, each night (Monday to Friday). This phase requires the closure of Junction 18, Charing Cross to Junction 16, Dobbie’s Loan. The Junction 19, Anderston on-slip and the Junction 18, Charing Cross on-slip roads will also remain closed. During this period, traffic should follow all diversions as detailed in Phase One. 
 
M8 Westbound Works 
 
From Sunday 26th February until Thursday 9th March 2023 there will be a closure of the M8 westbound at the Junction 15 Loop-U on-slip road from the A803. The closure will be in place Sunday through Thursday during the hours of 10pm and 6am, each night. Traffic will be instructed to continue on the A803 to turn left onto Castle Street to join the A804, Baird Street. From here, traffic will turn right to join Dobbie’s Loan onto Phoenix Road and will then turn left onto St. Georges Road to follow the A804 southbound. Traffic will proceed through Newton Street, Sauchiehall Street, Bath Street, and St. Vincent Street before bearing right to re-join the M8 westbound via Junction 20 at the Kingston Bridge.  
 
During this period, the M8 westbound Junction 17 on-slip road from Phoenix Road will be closed with traffic instructed to proceed on Phoenix Road and turn left onto St. Georges Road before following the above diversion route to complete their journey.  
 
The M8 westbound Junction 16 off-slip road will also be closed with traffic diverted via the Junction 17 off-slip road to Charing Cross from lane two to join the A804 at Newton Street. Traffic will continue through Sauchiehall Street, Bath Street, and St. Vincent Street before bearing right to re-join the M8 westbound via Junction 20 at Kingston Bridge.  
 
Please note, lane closures will be implemented on the M8 westbound carriageway between Junctions 15 and 19.  
 
M8 Overbridge Works 
 
Bridge deck expansion joint replacements will be undertaken from Monday 27th February until Thursday 16th March 2023 on the St Georges Road and Great Western Road overbridges. A northbound closure of the A82 Great Western Road between West Graham Street and St Georges Place will be required with an associated M8 Junction 17 eastbound off slip closure in place from Monday 27th February until Tuesday 7th March 2023. These closures will be in effect between the hours of 8pm and 6am, each night. Traffic travelling northbound on Cowcaddens Road/West Graham Street heading for Great Western Road will be instructed to exit onto the A81, Garscube Road then turn left onto Phoenix Road, turn left onto A804 St Georges Road, and will finally turn right onto the A82 Great Western Road. 
A southbound closure and northbound offside lane closure of Great Western Road between St Georges Place and West Graham Street will be in place from Wednesday 8th March to Thursday 16th March 2023 between 8pm and 6am, each night. Traffic travelling southbound on the A82 Great Western Road heading for West Graham Street will be instructed to exit onto St Georges Place, turn right onto Maryhill Road, turn left onto A804 St Georges Road, and will finally turn right onto A81 Garscube Road to West Graham Street/Cowcaddens Road. 
 
Bridge parapet replacement works at St. Georges Road overbridge will be undertaken with approximately 150m of parapet to be replaced between the Great Western Road on-ramp to St. Georges Subway station with a southbound nearside lane closure in place. 
 
Road users are advised to plan ahead and allow extra time for their journeys. We thank you for your patience and co-operation while these essential upgrades are underway.  
 
Access for emergency service vehicles will be maintained throughout these works.
