M9 BRIDGE WORKS – DAYTIME RESTRICTIONS TO END EARLY
Daytime lane closures to end on 29 January 2026
Overnight southbound carriageway closure 28 January 2026
Overnight northbound carriageway closures 29, 30 January 2026
Daytime lane closures on the bridge carrying the M9 motorway over the Forth & Clyde Canal between Junctions 6 and 7 will be removed ahead of schedule, at 06:00 on the morning of Thursday 29 January.
This has been made possible after the initial phase of investigation and repair work was completed earlier than expected.
The remainder of the programme has been adjusted to complete the works under overnight lane and carriageway closures:
There will now be no carriageway closures on the nights of 26 or 27 January or 2, 3 and 4 February.
The southbound carriageway of the M9 will be fully closed between Junctions 7 (Kinnaird House) and 5 (Cadgers Brae) from 20:00 until 06:00 on the night of Wednesday 28 January. During this overnight closure, a signed diversion route will be in place from M9 Junction 7 via the M876, A905, A88 Bellsdyke Road, B902 Carron Road, Ronades Road and A9. This diversion will add approximately 6 miles and 17 minutes to affected journeys.
Daytime fast lane closures will end at 06:00 on Thursday 29 January.
The northbound carriageway of the M9 will then be fully closed between Junctions 5 (Cadgers Brae) and 7 (Kinnaird House) from 20:00 until 06:00 on the nights of Thursday 29 and Friday 30 January. During these overnight closures, a signed diversion route will be in place from M9 Junction 5 via the A9, Ronades Road, B902 Carron Road, A88 Bellsdyke Road, A905 and M876. This diversion will add approximately 6 miles and 17 minutes to affected journeys.
The walkway under the bridge on the north side of the canal will also be closed from 12 to 19 February.
David Bishop, BEAR Scotland’s South East unit Bridges Manager, said: “The initial phase of these works involved investigation into the extent of the repairs required, and the work that’s been completed has allowed us to adjust the programme to bring forward the removal of daytime lane closures.
“We appreciate that these closures have caused significant delays and we’re sorry for the disruption this caused to people using the M9 this week. We’ll continue to do what we can to minimise the impact of works wherever it is safe to do so.”
UPDATE (16/01/2026): The carriageway closure on the M9 scheduled for the night of Monday 19 January will now be in the southbound direction, and two additional northbound carriageway closures are scheduled, on the nights of 26 and 27 January.
UPDATE (12/01/2026): One additional northbound carriageway closure will be required as part of these works, from 20:00 until 06:00 on the night of Monday 19 January.
Works to repair the bridge carrying the M9 motorway over the Forth & Clyde Canal next to the Kelpies are set to begin on 19 January.
For the safety of the public and the workforce during these works, daytime lane closures and overnight carriageway closures will be required:
The fast lanes on the M9 between Junctions 6 and 7 will be closed in both directions from 19 January until 19 February. This is expected to result in traffic delays of over 15 minutes during peak times.
The northbound carriageway of the M9 will be fully closed between Junctions 5 (Cadgers Brae) and 7 (Kinnaird House) from 20:00 until 06:00 on the nights of Monday 19 January and Monday 2, Tuesday 3 and Wednesday 4 February.
These works are being coordinated with joint replacement works on the nearby bridge carrying the M9 over the River Carron. For details of this scheme see https://www.bearscot.com/m9-carron-bridge-joint-replacement-works/
Relevant stakeholders have been consulted in advance to make them aware of these traffic management arrangements.
David Bishop, BEAR Scotland’s South East unit Bridges Manager, said: “This bridge on the M9 is being repaired to ensure it can continue to provide safe and reliable service.
“We appreciate that daytime lane closures will result in delays, however these are essential for safety.
“We’ll carry out works requiring full carriageway closures at night to minimise disruption.
“If you need to travel on the M9 during this period, please plan ahead and allow extra time for the diversion.
“We thank road users for their patience and understanding.”
