M8 Woodside Viaducts | Eastbound Overnight Bridge Jacking Works

Woodside Viaduct
4th of September 2026, 10:00pm to 7th of September 2026, 6:00am

Amey, on behalf of Transport Scotland, is undertaking extensive bridge jacking works on the M8 Woodside Viaducts, from Junction 18 to Junction 16.

The works require an extended closure of the eastbound M8 carriageway between Junctions 18 and 16 at the following times, with signed diversions in operation.

·       From 10pm on Friday 4th September until 11am on Saturday 5th September

·       From 10pm on Saturday 5th September until 6am on Sunday 6th September

·       From 7pm on Sunday 6th September until 6am on Monday 7th September

The westbound carriageway will continue to operate as normal.

The works are to jack the two triangular crosshead bridge supports on the eastbound carriageway of the M8 Woodside Viaducts, and form part of the essential maintenance required to allow all four lanes of the eastbound M8 carriageway to fully re-open, currently scheduled for later in 2026.

While these works take place, signed diversions will guide eastbound traffic around the closure. The route to follow depends on where vehicles join the M8.

Diversion Routes

Traffic joining the eastbound M8 at or before Junction 22 (Plantation):

Road users will be directed south along the M74 and then north along the M73 before returning eastbound:

·       Follow the southbound M74 to Junction 4, then turn left onto the northbound M73.

·       To rejoin the M8, leave the M73 at Junction 2. Vehicles heading west should take the first slip road onto the westbound M8. Vehicles heading east should follow Baillieston Roundabout and then join the eastbound M8.

·       To reach the M80, stay on the M73 to Junction 3. For destinations to the south-west, follow the A80 and then the southbound M80. For destinations to the north-east, continue onto the northbound M80.

Traffic joining the eastbound M8 at Junction 19 (Anderston) or Junction 18 (Charing Cross):

The eastbound entry slip roads at these junctions will be closed while the works are underway. This traffic, along with M8 traffic that is not using the M74 and M73 diversion, will be guided back to the motorway on local roads:

·       Vehicles that would normally join at Junction 19 or Junction 18 should continue north on North Street and St George’s Road and pick up the diversion at St George’s Cross.

·       Eastbound M8 traffic that is not using the M74 and M73 diversion will leave the motorway at Junction 18/17 (St George’s Cross).

·       From St George’s Cross, the diversion follows St George’s Road northbound, Garscube Road southbound and Dobbie’s Loan eastbound, rejoining the M8 at Junction 16 (Craighall).

Northbound M77 traffic will have the option of following the same diversions.

Woodside Viaduct Diversion Information

During the extended overnight closures this weekend, road users are advised to avoid travel through this location and should plan ahead, consider alternative routes and modes of transport, and allow additional time to complete any journeys.

The works have been planned in co-ordination with Transport Scotland, Traffic Scotland, the emergency services, bus operating companies and Glasgow City Council. Alternative travel arrangements have been made for emergency service vehicles.

Football clubs with fixtures scheduled for the weekend of 4th September have been contacted about the closure, so that fans can make suitable travel arrangements for both home and away games.

Full traffic management plans, including diversion routes, will be provided, with information being updated prior to and during the works, via the website – www.swtrunkroads.scot.

Please note that all schemes are weather dependent and may be cancelled or rescheduled if conditions are not favourable.

Road users are thanked for their patience and understanding while this work is carried out.
