M8 Junctions 21-23 | Essential Preparatory Works For Footbridge Refurbishments
Between Kinning Park and Ibrox
21st of September 2026, 6:00am to 10th of October 2026, 6:00am
Amey, on behalf of Transport Scotland, is continuing the refurbishment of the Cornwall Street and Kirkwood Street footbridges spanning the M8 between Junctions 21 and 23 (Kinning Park and Ibrox), south-west of Glasgow city centre.
The concrete bridge spans were removed in Summer 2024 and have since undergone extensive refurbishment off-site. Preparatory works continue ahead of the reinstatement of the refurbished bridge spans during Autumn/Winter 2026/27.
Please see below traffic management proposals covering the period Monday 21st September until Saturday 10th October 2026. Signed diversions will be in operation for any total closures.
Traffic Management
Monday 21st September – 6am on Saturday 26th September 2026
The following weekday overnight closures (8pm – 6am for all dates except Thursday 23rd which will be 11pm - 6am) will be in place each night during the above dates:
- Lane One closure of the M8 westbound secondary carriageway between Junctions 22 and 23.
- Closure of the M8 Helen Street on-slip road.
Traffic will be diverted via Helen Street, Edmiston Drive, Dumbreck Road, and the M77 northbound, where the diversion will end.
- Closure of the M8 eastbound mainline carriageway between Junctions 24 and 22.
Traffic will be diverted via Helen Street, Edmiston Drive, Dumbreck Road, and the M77 northbound, where the diversion will end.
- Closure of the M8 eastbound Junction 23 on-slip road.
Traffic will be diverted via Dumbreck Road onto the M77 northbound, where diversion will end.
- Lane Two closure of the M8 westbound mainline carriageway between Junctions 22 and 23.
Monday 28th September – 6am on Saturday 3rd October 2026
The following overnight closures (8pm – 6am) will be in place each night during the above dates:
- Lane One closure of the M8 westbound secondary carriageway between Junctions 22 and 23.
Monday 5th October – 6am on Saturday 10th October 2026
The following overnight closures (8pm – 6am) will be in place each night during the above dates:
- Closure of the M8 eastbound Junction 23 on-slip road.
Traffic will be diverted via Dumbreck Road onto the M77 northbound, where diversion will end.
- Lane Two closure of the M8 westbound mainline carriageway between Junctions 22 and 23.
- Closure of the M8 Helen Street on-slip road.
Traffic will be diverted via Helen Street, Edmiston Drive, Dumbreck Road, and the M77 northbound, where the diversion will end.
- Closure of the M8 eastbound mainline carriageway between Junctions 24 and 22.
Traffic will be diverted via Helen Street, Edmiston Drive, Dumbreck Road, and the M77 northbound, where the diversion will end.
Emergency service vehicle access will be maintained.
Refurbishment Works
The refurbishment programme is designed to extend the service life of these approximately 50-year-old structures and includes:
- Waterproofing and resurfacing of bridge decks
- Replacement of expansion joints
- Replacement of pedestrian parapets
- Concrete repairs and installation of cathodic corrosion protection
- Structural strengthening at half-joint locations
- Bearing replacements
- Vehicle restraint system upgrades
- Drainage improvements
Programme
The Cornwall Street and Kirkwood Street footbridges have remained closed to pedestrians and cyclists since Summer 2024 following removal of the bridge spans.
Pedestrian and cyclist diversions via the nearby Percy Street and Beech Avenue footbridges remain in place and will continue until the refurbished structures are reinstated.
Reinstallation of the bridge spans is currently scheduled for November 2026, with the footbridges expected to reopen to pedestrians in February 2027.

These works have been planned in consultation with Transport Scotland, Traffic Scotland, Glasgow City Council and the emergency services.
Please note that all works are weather dependent and may be postponed or rescheduled if conditions are unsuitable.
