M8 Junction 3A-4 | Slip Road Resurfacing
A series of overnight carriageway closures and one daytime slip road closure is planned on the M8 at Junctions 3A (Starlaw) and 4 (East Whitburn), to allow Transport Scotland’s operating company BEAR Scotland to resurface slip roads onto the motorway.
The following closures will be in place:
The M8 Junction 3A westbound on-slip will be closed between 20:30 and 06:00 on the night of Thursday 27 November, and the westbound carriageway of the M8 will be closed between Junctions 3A and 4 from 20:30 until 06:00 on the nights of Friday 28 November and Monday 1 December. During these closures, a signed diversion route will be in place via the A779, the A7066 and the A801, adding approximately 4 minutes and 1.3 miles onto affected journeys.
The M8 Junction 4 westbound on-slip will then be closed between 20:30 and 06:00 on the nights of 2, 3, 4, and 5 December, and the M8 westbound main carriageway between Junctions 3A and 4A will be closed between 20:30 and 06:00 on the nights of 3, 4, and 5 December. During these closures a signed diversion will be in place from M8 Junction 3A to M8 Junction 4A (Heartlands), via the A7066, the A706 and the B7066. This diversion is expected to add approximately 3.2 miles and 7 minutes to affected journeys.
In addition to these overnight works, the M8 Junction 4 westbound on-slip will also be closed during the day on Wednesday 3 December, from 06:00 until 15:00. This is necessary to allow sufficient material cooling time due to the depth of treatment. During this daytime closure, traffic wishing to join the M8 westbound will be diverted via the M8 eastbound to exit at Junction 3A and follow signs to join the M8 westbound via the A779 Starlaw Road, adding approximately 6.4 miles and 9 minutes to affected journeys.
Finally, the M8 Junction 4 eastbound on-slip will be closed between 20:30 and 06:00 on the nights of 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12 December, and the M8 eastbound main carriageway between Junctions 3A and 4A will be closed between 20:30 and 06:00 on the nights of 8, 9 and 11 December. During these closures a signed diversion will be in place from Junction 4A, following the B7066 and the A706 to Boghead Roundabout, to rejoin the M8 via the Junction 4 eastbound on-slip. This diversion is expected to add approximately 1.3 miles and 5 minutes to affected journeys.
Tommy Deans, BEAR Scotland’s South-East Network Manager, said "Carriageway and slip road closures are essential to ensure the safety of both road users and our workforce during these resurfacing works.
“We’ve scheduled the works at night to minimise disruption as far possible, however the works at M8 Junction 4 will require one daytime slip road closure, as resurfacing at this location will be significantly deeper and more comprehensive than is typically carried out during overnight closures. The new road surface will have a design life of 20 years.
“If you need to use this route during the works, our advice is to plan ahead and allow extra time for the diversions.”
Access for emergency vehicles will be maintained at all times.
Consultation has been carried out with emergency services and relevant stakeholders to share information about the project in advance.
