M8 Junction 21-23 | Site Re-Mobilisation For Footbridge Refurbishments
Amey, on behalf of Transport Scotland, is continuing the refurbishment of the Cornwall Street and Kirkwood Street footbridges spanning the M8 between Junctions 21 and 23 (Kinning Park and Ibrox), south-west of Glasgow city centre.
The concrete bridge spans were removed in Summer 2024 and have since undergone extensive refurbishment off-site. Works will re-commence on Monday 10th August 2026 to prepare for the reinstatement of the refurbished bridge spans during Autumn/Winter 2026/27.
Traffic management
To facilitate site re-mobilisation, weekday overnight traffic management will be required between 8pm and 6am during the following periods:
Monday 10th August to 6am on Saturday 15th August 2026
Monday 17th August to 6am on Saturday 22nd August 2026
Monday 24th August to 6am on Saturday 29th August 2026
The following traffic management measures will be in place, with signed diversion routes where required:
M8 Junction 21 (westbound) Carnoustie Street on-slip road closure
Traffic will be diverted via Scotland Street to the M8 westbound on-slip at Seaward Street.
M74 Junction 1 to M8 Junction 22 (westbound) closure
Traffic will be diverted via Scotland Street to the M8 westbound on-slip at Seaward Street.
M8 Junction 22 to Junction 23 (westbound)
A nearside lane closure and adjacent lane closure will be in place, progressing to an offside lane closure before Junction 23.
M8 Junction 24 to Junction 22 (eastbound)
An offside lane closure and adjacent lane closure will be in place.
Refurbishment works
The refurbishment programme is designed to extend the service life of these approximately 50-year-old structures and includes:
Waterproofing and resurfacing of bridge decks
Replacement of expansion joints
Replacement of pedestrian parapets
Concrete repairs and installation of cathodic corrosion protection
Structural strengthening at half-joint locations
Bearing replacements
Vehicle restraint system upgrades
Drainage improvements
Programme
The Cornwall Street and Kirkwood Street footbridges have remained closed to pedestrians and cyclists since Summer 2024 following removal of the bridge spans.
Pedestrian and cyclist diversions via the nearby Percy Street and Beech Avenue footbridges remain in place and will continue until the refurbished structures are reinstated.
Reinstallation of the bridge spans is currently scheduled for November 2026, with the footbridges expected to reopen to pedestrians in February 2027.
