M8 Junction 1-6A | Overnight Maintenance Works
Overnight carriageway closures will be in place on the M8 each night from the evening of 25 May until the morning of 14 July, to allow Transport Scotland’s operating company BEAR Scotland to carry out a variety of routine maintenance tasks.
Works to be carried out include grass cutting, drainage cleaning, sign cleaning, detailed inspections and road sweeping.
Dates, locations and diversion routes for closures are listed below.
M8 westbound Junction 1-2 : 25th May 19:30-06:00 (Total closure)
Diversion: Follow A720 north to Gogar Roundabout. Follow Glasgow Road west (A8) to M9 Junction.1 (Newbridge Roundabout). Take first exit to M9 southbound and keep right to M8 westbound.
M8 westbound Junction 2-3: 26th,27th and 28th May 19:30-06:00 (Total closure)
Diversion : M9 southbound traffic exit at Junction 1. M8 westbound traffic exit at Junction 2 and follow to M9 Junction 1. Both taking A89 west past Broxburn to Dechmont Roundabout. Take the first exit and travel south to M8 Junction 3 westbound on-slip.
M8 westbound Junction 3-3A: 29th May, 1st and 2nd June 19:30-06:00 (Total closure)
Diversion: M8 westbound traffic exit at Junction. 3. Follow A899 north to Dechmont Roundabout. Taking the first exit, follow A89 west to Boghall Roundabout. Take the second exit and follow A779 south to Starlaw West Roundabout. Access M8 westbound Junction. 3A from here.
M8 westbound Junction 3A-4: 3rd, 4th and 5th June 19:30-06:00 (Total closure)
Diversion: Leave M8 westbound at Junction 3A and take first exit at Starlaw Roundabout A779 north to Boghall Roundabout. Take the first exit and travel west along A7066 Starlaw Road to Boghead Roundabout. First exit to A801 travelling south to M8 Junction. 4.
M8 westbound Junction 4-4A: 7th and 8th June 19:30-06:00 (Total closure)
Diversion: From M8 Junction 4, travel south on A801 to A705 (Main Street) and travel west through Whitburn. Turn right onto A7069 Polkemmet Road and continue north to join M8 westbound at Junction 4A.
M8 westbound Junction 4A-5: 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th June 19:30-06:00 (Total closure)
Diversion: From M8 Junction 4A, travel south and then west on B7066 Hirst Road through Harthill. Turn right along B7057 to M8 Junction 5 Shotts.
M8 westbound Junction 5-6: 15th and 16th June 19:30-06:00 (Total closure)
Diversion: Follow B7066 to Newhouse Roundabout, take third exit onto A73 then first exit onto A8. At next roundabout take third exit onto M8 Junction 6A.
M8 eastbound Junction 6A-5: 17th, 18th and 19th June 19:30-06:00 (Total closure)
Diversion: Exit at M8 Junction 6A, take second exit onto A8. Continue to Junction 6 Newhouse and take third exit onto A73. Take first exit onto B7066 then take left onto B7057 to rejoin M8 eastbound at Junction 5.
M8 eastbound Junction 5-4A: 22nd, 23rd and 24th June 19:30-06:00 (Total closure)
Diversion: Follow B7057 south from Junction. 5. Turn left and travel along B7066 Hirst Road through Harthill, going straight over all roundabouts to access M8 Junction 4A.
M8 eastbound Junction 4A-4: 25th and 26th June 19:30-06:00 (Total closure)
Diversion: Exit at Junction 4A, travel south going straight across the next four roundabouts, before turning left and travelling along West Main Street through Whitburn. Continue straight along A705 East Main Street through East Whitburn. Turn left and travel north along A801 to M8 Junction 4.
M8 eastbound Junction 4-3A: 29th and 30th June 19:30-06:00 (Total closure)
Diversion: From M8 Junction 4, travel north along A801 to Boghead Roundabout. Take the fifth exit and follow A7066 east to Boghall Roundabout. Take the fourth exit to A779 and M8 Junction 3A.
M8 eastbound Junction 3A-3: 1st, 2nd and 3rd July 19:30-06:00 (Total closure)
Diversion: From M8 Junction 3A, continue east along Carnegie Road to Royston Roundabout. Take the first exit and follow to roundabout. Take the second exit and follow A89 east to Dechmont Roundabout. Take the fourth exit and continue south along A899 Livingston Road. Take the fourth exit at the roundabout to access M8 Junction 3A.
M8 eastbound Junction 3-2: 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th and 10th July 19:30-06:00 (Total closure)
Diversion: From M8 Junction 3 arriving at A899 roundabout, take the fourth exit north to Dechmont Roundabout. Take the third exit and follow A89 Edinburgh Road east to M9 Junction 1 Newbridge. Taking the third exit, continue on M9 south to join M8 at Junction 2.
M8 eastbound Junction 2-1: 13th July 19:30-06:00 (Total closure)
Diversion: Traffic travelling on M9 southbound advised to leave at M9 Junction. 1 to follow diversion. M8 eastbound traffic exits at Junction 2, following M9 northbound to Junction 1. All traffic then diverted eastbound along A8 Glasgow Road to Gogar Roundabout. Taking the fourth exit at Gogar, travel south along A720 to M8 Junction 1 Hermiston Gait.
Consultation has been carried out with emergency services and other relevant stakeholders to share information about the works in advance.
Tommy Deans, BEAR Scotland’s South East Network Manager, said: “We’ll be taking advantage of these overnight closures on the M8 to carry out as many routine maintenance tasks as possible, reducing the overall need for closures and traffic management.
“It is essential for the safety of the workforce that we close the carriageway while work is taking place. Our advice if you need to use the M8 at night during this period is to plan ahead and allow a few extra minutes for your journey.
“We’re grateful to road users and the local community for their understanding.”
