M8 Hillington Interchange Phase Four | Major Bridge Refurbishments

Amey, on behalf of Transport Scotland, is undertaking a major bridge refurbishment project, including rail and slip road upgrades, on the M8 at Junction 26 (Hillington Interchange). These essential works, valued at approximately £9million, will be delivered over five phases from September 2025 until Spring 2026 and include significant repairs and upgrades to four key bridge structures, addressing vehicle parapets, structure waterproofing, safety barriers, and carriageway surfacing.

PHASE FOUR: 
Phase Four will take place from Friday 13th February until Sunday 8th March 2026 under a 2+2 contraflow. The overnight closures (8pm – 6am) of the M8 Junction 26 eastbound on-slip road will continue for the duration of Phase Four, as well as the overnight closures of the M8 Junction 26 westbound off-slip road and the Junction 25A westbound off-slip road.

Traffic will be diverted as follows:
North of Hillington Interchange for Vehicles in Renfrew/Braehead Area:  

Overnight traffic wishing to use the Junction 26 on-slip road will be directed to follow Hillington Interchange to Renfrew Road, Shieldhall Road, and Helen Street to join the M8 eastbound at the Junction 24 (Helen Street Interchange) on-slip road.  

South of Hillington Interchange for vehicles in Hillington Industrial Estate area:  

All traffic wishing to use Junction 26 from south of the Interchange will be directed to follow Hillington Road to Paisley Road West, Helen Street, and then join the M8 eastbound via Junction 24 (Helen Street Interchange) on-slip road. 

For 8 nights (25th February to 5th March) J25a and J26 require a closure at the same time along with closure of the westbound carriageway. During this period the secondary westbound carriageway requires a closure with the following diversion: 

Traffic for the M8 Secondary Carriageway: 
Traffic will be instructed to leave the M8 westbound via J23 and follow Paisly Road West, to Hillington Interchange where the diversion will end and vehicle join on to the M8 carriageway. 

The contraflow lane will remain open on the M8 for all vehicles travelling westbound. J24 and J25 westbound off-slips will remain open but both on-slips require a closure along with the J25a and J26 westbound off-slips. Vehicles shall follow the same diversion for the secondary carriageway via Paisley Road West to access the M8 westbound carriageway with closure of J24 and J25 on-slips. For closure of J25a and J26 off slip traffic will be diverted as follows:

Traffic for the M8 Junction 26 westbound off-slip road will be diverted as follows:

Traffic will be instructed to continue to the westbound M8 Junction 27 off slip, take 4th exit at roundabout and follow Renfrew Rd northbound to the next roundabout to join the M8 eastbound and exit to re-join the M8 westbound.

Traffic for the M8 Junction 25A westbound off-slip road will be diverted as follows:

Traffic will be instructed to continue on the M8 westbound and will exit via the Junction 26 off-slip road onto the Hillington Interchange, from here traffic will turn right onto Hillington Road. Traffic will then join King's Inch Road to be diverted right onto Old Govan Road, where diversion will end. When J26 is closed at the same time vehicles will follow same diversion as above for J26 westbound off-slip closure 

A 40mph speed limit remains in effect throughout the project's duration, with average speed cameras in operation, ensuring the safety of the workforce and the travelling public as 24/7 construction work will take place.

Overnight closures will be required for traffic management installation and changes as the project progresses; these will be communicated in advance on swtrunkroads.scot. Recovery vehicles will also be on-site.  

Since the commencement of this project, reported delays for road users have been negligible outwith typical congestion on this section of the M8 during AM and PM commuter peaks.

Retail outlets in the Hillington area, including Braehead Shopping Centre, will be operating as normal with trading hour details available from their associated websites and social media channels. Any road closures required have been planned with a later start time to mitigate disruption to shoppers.

Unfortunately, construction noise will be unavoidable for the duration of works. Suitable noise dampening measures will be implemented on-site overnight when undertaking works.  

During this phase abnormal loads can travel in both directions between Junction 27 and 26.

Access for emergency service vehicles will be maintained throughout these works.  

This scheme has been planned in consultation with Transport Scotland, Traffic Scotland, the emergency services, Renfrewshire Council, Glasgow City Council, West Dunbartonshire Council, and Braehead Shopping Centre.   
Please note, all schemes are weather dependent and may be cancelled or rescheduled if weather conditions are not favourable.  

Road users are thanked for their patience and understanding while this work is being undertaken. Advice is to allow for extra time to complete any journeys during this period, using alternative routes where possible. Various road network improvements are taking place across the M8 corridor through Glasgow and these should be considered in any journey planning.
