M8 Hillington Interchange December Update | Major Bridge Refurbishment
Amey, on behalf of Transport Scotland, is undertaking a major bridge refurbishment project, including rail and slip road upgrades, on the M8 at Junction 26 (Hillington Interchange). These essential works, valued at approximately £9million, will be delivered over five phases from September 2025 until Spring 2026 and include significant repairs and upgrades to four key bridge structures, addressing vehicle parapets, structure waterproofing, safety barriers, and carriageway surfacing.
FESTIVE PERIOD 2025
Traffic management in place for Phase Two will change over December 2025 to accommodate festive travel and shopping with all surrounding M8 slip roads associated with the maintenance re-opening. These will remain open as usual between Thursday 18th December 2025 and Monday 5th January 2026.
SLIP ROAD CLOSURES
The M8 Junction 26 eastbound on-slip re-opened on Tuesday 1st December 2025 and remains open.
Overnight closures (10pm –6am) of the M8 Junction 25A westbound off-slip road will be required on the evenings of Monday 15th December, Tuesday 16th December, and Wednesday 17th December 2025.
Traffic will be directed to follow the below signed diversion:
Traffic will be instructed to continue on the M8 westbound and will exit via the Junction 26 off-slip road onto the Hillington Interchange, from here traffic will turn right onto Hillington Road. Traffic will then join King's Inch Road to be diverted right onto Old Govan Road, where diversion will end.
The M8 Junction 25A westbound off-slip road will then be open as usual from Thursday 18th December 2025.
M8 MAINLINE CONTRAFLOW
The 2+2 contraflow on the M8 mainline carriageway at Junction 26 (Hillington Interchange), which involves the closure of Lane One and Lane Two of the eastbound carriageway and requires narrow running lanes to facilitate will remain in place during this period.
A 40mph speed limit remains in effect throughout the project's duration, with average speed cameras in operation, ensuring the safety of the workforce and the travelling public as 24/7 construction work will take place. Recovery vehicles will also be on-site.
Since the commencement of this project, reported delays for road users have been negligible outwith typical congestion on this section of the M8 during AM and PM commuter peaks.
There is no passage for abnormal loads travelling in the eastbound direction between Junction 27 and 26. Abnormal Loads can travel westbound on the carriageway straddling the two available lanes.
Access for emergency service vehicles will be maintained throughout these works.
Retail outlets in the Hillington area, including Braehead Shopping Centre, will be operating festive trading hours with full details available from their associated websites and social media channels. Any slip road closures required have been planned with a later start time to mitigate disruption to shoppers.
This scheme has been planned in consultation with Transport Scotland, Traffic Scotland, the emergency services, Renfrewshire Council, Glasgow City Council, West Dunbartonshire Council, and Braehead Shopping Centre.
Please note, all schemes are weather dependent and may be cancelled or rescheduled if weather conditions are not favourable.
Road users are thanked for their patience and understanding while this work is being undertaken. Advice is to allow for extra time to complete any journeys during this period, using alternative routes where possible. Various road network improvements are taking place across the M8 corridor through Glasgow and these should be considered in any journey planning.
Updates to this project including the commencement of each new phase will be communicated via swtrunkroads.scot.
