M8 Between Junction 5 Shotts And Junction 6A Chapelhall | Road Surfacing Works
Road users are advised that there will be a full weekend contraflow system in place on the M8 between Junction 5 Shotts and Junction 6A Chapelhall, for essential road surfacing works, from the following times and dates:
• 8pm on Friday 13 March until 6am Monday 16 March 2026
As a result, there will be No Exit from the M8 westbound Junction 6 Newhouse to A73 or adjacent link road to A8 westbound for Chapelhall, Eurocentral & Coatbridge.
For A73 (Airdrie/ Lanark) or A8 link road to Eurocentral & Coatbridge, drivers will be advised to leave the M8 westbound early at Junction 5 Shotts and follow the signed diversion route: B7066 Hirst Road (west), continue B7066 through Salsburgh village, B7066 Glasgow & Edinburgh Road continuing to Newhouse roundabout and follow permanent signage for A73 (Airdrie/ Lanark). For A8 westbound take 3rd exit at Newhouse roundabout for A73 Bellside Road (North), to A8 Newhouse Junction, take 1st exit at roundabout for A8 westbound and follow permanent signage for A8 Eurocentral & Coatbridge.
The diversion route for traffic leaving the M8 westbound early at Junction 5 Shotts and travelling via the B7066 to Newhouse Junction to return to the A8 westbound for Eurocentral & Coatbridge will add an estimated 3.25 miles and 5 minutes to affected journeys.
Emergency Services access will be maintained through the roadworks area.
The closure of the M8/A8 westbound approach to Junction 6 Newhouse is required to ensure road user and road worker safety whilst essential carriageway resurfacing works are undertaken and have been scheduled over a full weekend. A contraflow system will be in place on the eastbound carriageway, with one lane in each direction, to minimise disruption to traffic as much as possible. A 50 mile per hour speed restriction will be in force for the contraflow system. The road will reopen at 6am on Monday morning. .
Road users are encouraged to plan ahead and check Traffic Scotland’s website prior to travelling to check their route.
The works will be carried out by Scottish Road Partnership on behalf of Transport Scotland to maintain the integrity and safety of this route. The works have been planned in consultation with Transport Scotland, the emergency services and North Lanarkshire Council.
Please note, all works are weather dependent and may be cancelled or rescheduled if weather conditions are not favourable.
