M74 Junction 5 Raith And Junction 6 Hamilton/Motherwell | Overnight Closures

UPDATE (13/11/2025): Road users are advised that Phase 1 of these works has been cancelled.

Road users are advised that the M74 northbound and southbound carriageways between Junction 5 Raith and Junction 6 Hamilton/ Motherwell will be closed for two nights. This will involve separate overnight closures of the M74 motorway, one in each direction, commencing Friday 14 November 2025, for essential cyclic maintenance & road surface patching works. 

The works are planned to be undertaken in two phases, with only one carriageway closed at a time, as follows:

Phase 1 – 
The M74 southbound carriageway between Junction 5 Raith and Junction 6 Hamilton/Motherwell will be closed for one overnight, between 8pm and 6am the following day on: 
•    Friday 14 November (1 night)

As a result, the following slip roads will also be closed:

•    M74 southbound Junction 5 Raith on slip road from Raith roundabout (A725)
•    M74 southbound Junction 6 off slip road for Motherwell (A723)
•    M74 southbound Junction 6 off slip road for Hamilton (A723)  

A signed diversion will be in place via the M74 southbound Junction 5 Raith off slip road to Raith roundabout, take 5th exit for A7071 Bellshill Road towards Bothwell, B7071 Bothwell Road to Hamilton, A72 Muir Street & Palace Grounds Road, A723 Motherwell Road to rejoin M74 southbound at Junction 6 Hamilton on slip road or continue A723 for Motherwell.


Phase 2 - 
The M74 northbound carriageway between Junction 6 Hamilton/Motherwell and Junction 5 Raith, including Hamilton Motorway Services entrance and exit to/from the motorway, will be closed for one overnight, between 8pm and 6am the following day on: 
•    Monday 17 November (1 night)

As a result, the following slip roads will also be closed:

•    M74 northbound Junction 6 on slip road from Hamilton (A723)
•    M74 northbound Junction on slip road from Motherwell (A723)
•    M74 northbound off slip road to Hamilton Motorway Services
•    M75 northbound on slip road from Hamilton Motorway Services
•    M74 northbound Junction 5 Raith off slip road to Raith roundabout (A725)

A signed diversion route will be in place via the M74 northbound Junction 6 Hamilton off slip road to A723, take 3rd exit at roundabout for Palace Grounds Road (A72), continue Muir Street Hamilton, B7071 Bothwell Road for Bothwell, A7071 Bellshill Road for A725 Raith roundabout and follow permanent signage for M74 northbound Glasgow or Bellshill/ East Kilbride (A725) and access to Strathclyde Country Park.

The diversion routes for each phase of works will add an estimated 1.5 miles and 5 minutes to affected journeys.  
Road users are encouraged to plan ahead and check Traffic Scotland prior to travelling at these times to check their route. 
 

Access through the works will be maintained for Emergency Service vehicles. 
 

These closures have been scheduled overnight to minimise disruption to traffic and are required to ensure road user and road worker safety.
 

The works will be carried out by Scottish Roads Partnership on behalf of Transport Scotland to maintain the integrity and safety of this route. The works have been planned in consultation with Transport Scotland, North & South Lanarkshire Councils, Amey South West Unit and Police Scotland.
 

Please note, all works are weather dependent and may be cancelled or rescheduled if weather conditions are not favourable.
