Up to 25m to improve variable message signs on the trunk road network

A major contract to upgrade electronic signage across Scotland’s trunk road network has been awarded.

Up to £25m will be invested in improving and replacing Variable Message Signs (VMS) at locations around the country to ensure Traffic Scotland continues to provide drivers with high quality, real-time traffic and travel information.

The five-year contract has been awarded to Swarco UK and Ireland, following a competitive tender process.

Cabinet Secretary for Transport Fiona Hyslop said:

“Roadside Variable Message Signs are an instantly recognisable part of Scotland’s trunk road network and play a vital role in helping drivers access the most up-to-date traffic and travel information.

“Signs will be upgraded or replaced at various locations around the country over the next five years. The motorway network in Glasgow is one area in particular where upgrading to more modern technology will improve Traffic Scotland’s ability to manage vehicles on this section of the network.

“This investment will ensure that roadside technology remains fit for purpose and continues to support the safe and efficient performance of the trunk road network.”
