A90 Kingsway | Footbridge Removal Works

Kingsway, Dundee
18th of June 2025, 7:30pm to 4th of July 2025, 6:30am

Amey is undertaking overnight work to remove two footbridges which cross the A90 Kingsway in Dundee from Wednesday 18th June to Friday 4th July.

The Strathmartine Road and Old Glamis Road footbridges are being moved off site so that they can be refurbished and later re-installed on the A90 Kingsway.

The programme of maintenance required, which Amey is undertaking on behalf of Transport Scotland, to ensure these 41-year-old structures continue to operate safely and efficiently will include:

Waterproofing and resurfacing of each bridge deck;
Refurbished ramps and main spans;
Pedestrian parapet replacement;
Concrete repairs of piers and crossheads, including installation of cathodic corrosion protection;
Strengthening of existing concrete edge beams;
Bearing replacements;
Drainage upgrades.
To ensure the safety of roadworkers and motorists, there will be full overnight closures of the A90 Kingsway between Strathmartine Roundabout and Old Glamis Road Roundabout from 7.30pm to 6.30am each night.

The following diversions will be in place during the road closures.

A90 westbound traffic towards Dundee can take the third exit at Swallow Roundabout onto the A85, following the route towards the Tay Road Bridge. In Dundee city centre traffic can turn right onto the A991 and follow the route along East Dock Street and Broughty Ferry Road, taking a left turn onto Greendykes Road. Traffic can then take the first exit at Scott Fyffe Roundabout onto the A972 Kingsway East to rejoin the A90.

Eastbound traffic from the A90 Forfar Road can follow the route in reverse.

Diversions for local traffic will also be in place via Gilburn Road and Park Road.

To maintain safe access across the A90 Kingsway for pedestrians throughout the works, two temporary pedestrian crossings have been constructed as alternative crossing points. These crossings will be signalised to control traffic and will be removed when the refurbishment works are completed.

These temporary crossings will be operational from Monday 9th June.

The on-site repair works are planned to begin on Tuesday 8th July and last for approximately five months. The A90 Kingsway will remain open to traffic, with no traffic management in place, and the footways will also remain open for use while on-site repairs are undertaken.

The on-site repair works will take place during daytime hours within the verge/footway area, with fencing in place for the protection of members of the public.

The final phase of the works to re-install the refurbished bridges is currently anticipated to take place in early 2026. Further communications will be issued to confirm exact dates and traffic management for the re-installation of the footbridges, which is expected to take approximately three weeks.

Unfortunately, due to the nature of these works, there is likely to be some noise associated with them. Amey will look to programme operations to minimise any disturbance as much as possible.

Please note, all schemes are weather dependent and may be cancelled or rescheduled if weather conditions are not favourable.
