A90 Finavon Bridge | Essential Maintenance

A90 Finavon Bridge
15th of July 2026, 7:30pm to 1st of October 2026, 6:30am
A90 Finavon Bridge

Amey will be undertaking essential maintenance at Finavon Bridge on the A90 as part of a major project to strengthen and protect the structure for future use.

The maintenance, which Amey is undertaking on behalf of Transport Scotland, will deliver permanent improvements to the bridge's foundations and riverbed protection systems.

The work will help safeguard this key route on the A90 between Forfar and Brechin, protecting the bridge against future scour and erosion and enhancing its long-term resilience.

The works will include:

Installation of piled walls at the north and south bridge abutments.
Installation of concrete mattresses and rock bags/mattresses across the river bed.
Due to the physical, ecological and environmental constraints of the site, the project will be delivered over two construction phases:

Phase 1: July to October 2026
Phase 2: May to September 2027
The first phase of works will focus on repairs and scour protection measures at the northern side of the bridge, with a second phase of construction planned for 2027 to complete works at the southern side of the structure.

Planned Traffic Management

Traffic management installation:

Wednesday 15th July (7.30pm) to Sunday 19th July (7.30pm): Continuous lane 2 restrictions on both the northbound and southbound carriageways.
Friday 17th July and Saturday 18th July (7.30pm to 6.30am): Overnight convoy working will also be in place.
Main construction phase:

A contraflow system will be in operation from 7.30pm on Sunday 19th July.
The main construction during phase one is currently expected to run until October 2026, although timings are subject to progress on site, weather conditions and other operational factors.

Once the main construction activity is complete, temporary lane closures and overnight convoy working will be required to allow the safe removal of traffic management measures. Further details will be communicated in advance once the programme has been confirmed.

Access to local businesses and properties will be maintained throughout the project.

Road users are also reminded that separate carriageway works are currently taking place on the A90 at Brechin, to the north of Finavon Bridge.

Contraflow traffic management is in operation at Brechin until Friday 14th August, and will return between Monday 17th August and Monday 28th September. Drivers travelling through the area should allow additional time for journeys, particularly during peak periods.

Please note, all schemes are weather dependent and may be cancelled or rescheduled if weather conditions are not favourable.
