A90 Brechin | Carriageway And Drainage Maintenance

A90 Brechin
27th of October 2025, 7:30pm to 20th of December 2025, 6:30am

Amey is undertaking essential carriageway and drainage maintenance work on the A90 at Brechin between Monday 27th October and Friday 19th December.

The essential maintenance, which Amey is undertaking on behalf of Transport Scotland, is being carried out to address surface deterioration on the A90 northbound carriageway and drainage issues affecting both northbound and southbound sections.

Remedial work to address surface deterioration will be undertaken on the A90 northbound between one kilometre west of the A935 St. Ann’s Junction to 200 metres east of the B966 Keithock junction.

This will involve the installation of a continuous asphalt surface course to repair multiple degraded areas and restore surface integrity. These works will provide a safer, smoother road surface and aim to provide protection against further deterioration of the carriageway, while laying the groundwork for a long-term reconstruction in future years.

In addition, drainage remediation will be carried out on both the north and southbound carriageways to correct existing defects and enhance overall performance. These interventions are necessary to stabilise current conditions and reduce the risk of further deterioration.

While this approach is more extensive than previous patching efforts, Transport Scotland and Amey will continue to assess data from earlier investigations to inform future maintenance needs for this stretch of the A90.

To ensure the safety of roadworkers and motorists, the work will be delivered under three phases of traffic management, incorporating overnight lane restrictions and a contraflow, as follows:

Overnight Lane Restrictions - Monday 27th October to Friday 7th November
Drainage Work: Lane restrictions north and southbound between 7.30pm and 6.30am each night. All slip roads to and from Brechin will remain open.

Contraflow - Sunday 9th November to Friday 5th December
Carriageway Maintenance: A 24/7 contraflow will be in operation. Northbound slip road closures will also be in place.

Overnight Lane Restrictions - Monday 8th December to Friday 19th December
Drainage Work: Lane restrictions north and southbound between 7.30pm and 6.30am each night. All slip roads to and from Brechin will remain open.

Contraflow Northbound Slip Closures and Diversions

During the contraflow the following northbound slip road closures and diversions will be in place:

The A90 northbound off slip to Brechin at the A935 St. Ann’s junction will be closed.
Traffic can continue on the A90 northbound through the contraflow to Stracathro services where they can turn and return southbound to exit at the A935 St. Ann’s junction southbound off slip to Brechin.

The A935 St. Ann’s Junction northbound on slip to the A90 from Brechin will be closed.
Traffic will be diverted through Brechin to the B966 Keithock junction northbound on slip for the A90, where they can access the A90 northbound.

When the B966 Keithock Junction northbound on slip is closed for a short duration at the end of the works, traffic will be required to travel on the A90 southbound to Kirriemuir junction where they can turn and return on the A90 northbound carriageway

The A90 northbound off slip to Brechin at the B966 Keithock junction will be closed.
Traffic can continue on the A90 northbound to Stracathro services where they can turn and return southbound to exit at the B966 Keithock southbound off slip.

The B966 Keithock Junction northbound on slip to the A90 from Brechin will be closed for a short duration at end of the contraflow.
Traffic for the A90 northbound will be required to travel on the A90 southbound to Kirriemuir junction where they can turn and return on the A90 northbound carriageway.

All schemes are weather dependent and may be cancelled or rescheduled if weather conditions are not favourable.
