UPDATE (01/04/2026): Due to changes in the programme, works on the A9 south of Tain have paused and traffic management has been removed until works resume. Operatives are currently expected to return on Tuesday 14 April for a further three nights of work.

UPDATE (11/03/2026) Due to poor weather forecast for the rest of this week, works on the A9 south of Tain will now start on Sunday 15 March. Additionally there will now be temporary traffic lights in place during the day for eight days.

BEAR Scotland, on behalf of Transport Scotland, will be carrying out essential surface improvements on A9 South of Tain for 14 nights.

Works are set to take place each night between 8pm and 6am from the evening of Sunday 15 March until the morning of Friday 17 April, subject to weather conditions. No works will take place on Friday or Saturday nights.

To protect roadworkers and motorists there will be a lane closure with a 10mph convoy in place each night. Temporary traffic lights will be in place during the day from Monday 16 March to Thursday 23 March with the exception of Friday 20 to Sunday 22 March. The A9 will be open outwith working hours to keep disruption to a minimum, with a speed restriction of 30mph in place as traffic will be running over a temporary surface.

Steven Taylor, BEAR Scotland’s North West Planned Maintenance Manager said: “This resurfacing project on the A9 will help address defects and greatly improve the surface for motorists.

“Our teams will do all they can to complete the works efficiently, and we thank the local community and road users for their patience in advance while we complete these works.

“We encourage motorists to plan ahead before setting out by checking the Traffic Scotland website for up-to-date travel information.”
