A9 North Kessock | Active Travel Improvements
The final phase of improvements to the walking, wheeling and cycling facilities on the A9 between Kessock Bridge and North Kessock Junction is set to begin on Monday 16 June.
The works to be undertaken by BEAR Scotland, Transport Scotland’s operating company, will see the shared-use pathway that forms part of National Cycle Route 1 widened and improved. The existing safety barrier will also be repositioned as part of the works to allow the path to be widened, making the footway safer and more accessible.
The improvements are scheduled to begin on Monday 16 June and are expected to be completed by the morning of Saturday 5 July, subject to weather. Works will be carried out between 7pm and 6am each night with no works planned on Saturday or Sunday nights.
To protect our operatives and road users, single lane closures will be in place on the A9 northbound carriageway during working hours. A 30mph speed limit will also apply 24 hours per day until the improvements are complete.
In addition, the existing National Cycle Route 1 path adjacent to the A9 will be closed from North Kessock Junction to Old Craigton Road for the duration of the works. People walking, wheeling or cycling will be diverted to the alternative National Cycle Route 1 through North Kessock.
Euan Scott, BEAR Scotland’s Northwest Representative said: “These works at North Kessock are part of an ongoing commitment to improve safety, quality, and comfort for active travel groups using National Cycle Route 1 adjacent to the A9.
“This phase of the project will complete improvements to the shared-use pathway, and including upgrading of the existing safety barrier.
“Our project team will be working along the verge of the A9 hence traffic management is necessary and will protect operatives and road users alike whilst the works are undertaken.
“We will do all we can to complete the project as quickly as possible, but would encourage road users to plan their journey in advance, by checking the Traffic Scotland website for up-to-date traffic information, and allow some extra time to reach their destination.”
