A86 Newtonmore to Laggan | Resurfacing Works
BEAR Scotland, on behalf of Transport Scotland, is set to carry out essential resurfacing works on the A86 between Newtonmore and Laggan from Sunday 28 June 2026.
The essential works, which will address defects in the existing road surface and improve road markings, will take place between the hours of 8pm and 6am and are scheduled to be completed by 6am on Thursday 16 July 2026.
To ensure the safety of all road users, the A86 trunk road will be closed in both directions between Newtonmore and Laggan during working hours.
A diversion route suitable for trunk road traffic will be signposted between 8pm and 6am each night.
Eastbound traffic will be diverted via the A889 and A9, before rejoining the A86 at Kingussie. Westbound traffic will follow the same diversion in reverse. This will add approximately 12 miles and 14 minutes to journey times.
Access for emergency services and scheduled bus services will be maintained for the full duration of the works. Consultation has taken place with all relevant stakeholders.
Steve Taylor, BEAR Scotland’s North West Design Manager, said: “These essential resurfacing works on the A86 between Newtonmore and Laggan will address defects in the existing road surface and improve the quality and safety of the road for all users.
“The overnight closures are essential for the safety of road workers and motorists due to the narrow widths of the road at this location.
“Our teams will do all they can to complete the works as quickly and safely as possible. We thank the local community and road users for their patience while we complete these improvements.”
All works are weather dependent and subject to postponement or cancellation in the event of adverse conditions.
