A82 Laggan and Fort Augustus Swing Bridges | Essential Maintenance
BEAR Scotland, on behalf of Transport Scotland, are set to carry out essential maintenance works on two swing bridges along the A82. The works are required to replace components which are necessary to operate the bridges effectively.
Works will be carried out between 9.30pm and 6am each night. Due to the nature of the works the A82 will be subject to full road closures during these works.
Laggan swing bridge: Scheduled to start on the evening of Monday 20 April until the morning of Wednesday 22 April. During working hours, a signed diversion route via Spean Bridge using the A9 and A86 will be in place. This diversion is suitable for all trunk road traffic and will add an estimated 24 miles and 25 minutes to the journey time of those travelling between Inverness and Fort William.
Fort Augustus swing bridge: Set to begin on the evening of Wednesday 22 April until the morning of Friday 24 April. During working hours, a signed diversion route via Invermoriston to Invergarry using the A87 and A887 will be in place. This diversion is suitable for all trunk road traffic and will add an estimated 16 miles and 20 minutes to the journey time of those travelling between Inverness and Fort William.
Due to the nature of the works, no alternative cycle route can be used.
Consultation has taken place with all relevant stakeholders and emergency services.
All works are dependent on the weather and existing condition of the structure and may be subject to changes and cancellation once investigations begin.
Richard Cook, BEAR Scotland’s North West Bridge Manager said: “The replacement of vital components to maintain and improve the reliability of both bridges is key to ensuring their structural integrity and extend their service life for years to come.
“The works have been planned to minimise disruption to road users, residents, businesses and the local community as far as possible. Some full closures of the road are required to ensure the safety of our workforce and road users. These will be limited to overnight hours to minimise any disruption. The works will not affect canal users.
“We thank road users in advance for their patience and understanding while our teams carry out these essential works.”
