A78 Monktonhead Roundabout | Resurfacing
Amey, on behalf of Transport Scotland, is undertaking essential resurfacing on the A78 at Monktonhead Roundabout in Prestwick, including the southbound approach and the northbound exit, from Saturday 14th March until Tuesday 17th March 2026 between the hours of 8pm and 6am each night.
From Saturday 14th March and Sunday 15th March, overnight closures of the A78 northbound, the Monktonhead Roundabout exit to the A79 westbound, the A78 carriageway between Dutchhouse Roundabout and Monktonhead Roundabout, between Monktonhead Roundabout and the A79 southbound and between Monktonhead Roundabout and the Main Street (Monkton) will be in operation.
Traffic for Loans via the A78 northbound will be diverted via the A78 southbound to Dutchhouse Roundabout and should follow the A77 northbound, Bellfield Roundabout, A71 Hurlford Road, Moorfield Roundabout, Corsehill Mount Roundabout and Warrix Interchange to follow permanent signage.
Traffic wishing to reach Barassie Troon via the A78 between Dutchhouse Roundabout and Monktonhead Roundabout should follow the above diversion.
Traffic for the A79 westbound will be diverted via the A78 southbound to Dutchhouse Roundabout and should follow the A77 southbound, Whitletts Roundabout, Healthfield Road, Ayr Road, Main Street, Monkton Road and Shawhill Roundabout to follow permanent signage. Traffic wishing to reach Prestwick Airport should follow this diversion.
During this time, local diversion route will be in place to maintain residential access to Main Street.
On Sunday 15th March, daytime dedicated lane closure of the A79 eastbound towards the A78 northbound will be in operation between the hours of 6am and 8pm.
Traffic wishing to travel north on the A78 will be diverted via A79 westbound, Shawhill Farm roundabout, A79 Monton Rd and Ayr Road, B743 Heathfield Road, Whitlett’s Roundabout, A77 northbound to Dutch House Roundabout, Bellfield Roundabout, A71 Hurlford Road, Moorfield Roundabout, A71 and Corsehill Mount Roundabout to re-join the A78 at Warrix Interchange.
On Monday 16th March and Tuesday 17th March, overnight closures of the A78 northbound between Monktonhead Roundabout and Loans and dedicated lane closure on the A79 eastbound will be in operation.
Traffic for Loans via the A78 northbound will be diverted via the A78 southbound to Dutchhouse Roundabout and should follow the A77 northbound, Bellfield Roundabout, A71 Hurlford Road, Moorfield Roundabout, Corsehill Mount Roundabout and Warrix Interchange to follow permanent signage.
Traffic from the A79 eastbound wishing to travel north on the A78 will be diverted via A79 westbound, Shawhill Farm roundabout, A79 Monton Rd and Ayr Road, B743 Heathfield Road, Whitlett’s Roundabout, A77 northbound to Dutch House Roundabout, Bellfield Roundabout, A71 Hurlford Road, Moorfield Roundabout, A71 and Corsehill Mount Roundabout to re-join the A78 at Warrix Interchange.
Traffic management will be removed by 6am on Wednesday 18th March.
Access for emergency service vehicles will be maintained throughout these works.

This scheme will benefit vehicles using this route each day, by improving the safety and condition of the carriageway in this location.
