A78 At Eglinton Interchange | Essential Investigations

Amey, on behalf of Transport Scotland, is undertaking essential investigations on the A78 at Eglington Interchange, north of Irvine, from Sunday 1st March until Friday 20th March 2026

On Sunday 1st March and Monday 2nd March 2026, nighttime investigations on the A737 Flyover (Irvine Rd) will be required between the hours of 20:00pm – 06:00am each night. Daytime investigations will also be required at this location on Monday 9th, between the hours of 09:30am – 15:30pm. Investigative work on the A737 Flyover will be carried out under single lane closures managed by temporary traffic lights. 

From Tuesday 3rd March until Friday 20th March 2026, investigations will then be required on the A78 carriageway. This work will take place overnight between the hours of 8pm and 6am. The programme of closures and their associated diversion routes are as follows:  

Week 1: 
Tuesday 3rd March 2026:  

  • Overnight closure of A78 northbound carriageway between Eglinton Interchange & Pennyburn Roundabout with a full closure of the A78 northbound on slip from Eglinton Interchange. 
  • Traffic will be diverted from the northbound off-slip road onto Eglinton Interchange, from here traffic will join Kilwinning Road to join the A737, Irvine Road through to Stevenston Road. Traffic will be able to re-join the A78 westbound at Pennyburn Roundabout, where diversion will end.  


    Wednesday 4th & Thursday 5th March 2026:  

  • Overnight closure of the A78 southbound carriageway between Pennyburn Roundabout and Eglinton Interchange with a full closure of the A78 and off-slip road to Eglinton Interchang.  
  • Traffic will be diverted at Pennyburn Roundabout onto Stevenston Road to join the A737 Irvine Road. From here, traffic will be able to rejoin the A78 eastbound at Eglinton Interchange, where diversion will end.  
  • On Thursday 5th March, there will be an additional lane 2 closure of the A78 northbound carriageway.  


    Friday 6th March 2026:  

  • Traffic Management as per Tuesday 3rd March.  
  • Additional lane 2 closure of A78 southbound carriageway. 
     

Week 2: 
Wednesday 11th March :

  •  Traffic management proposals as per Tuesday 3rd March. 

Week 3:  
Sunday 15th March : 
 

  • Traffic management proposals as per Wednesday 4th March. Monday 16th March 2026:  
  • Overnight closure of the A78 southbound off-slip road.  
  • Traffic will be diverted to continue on the A78 southbound to Warrix Interchange, and from here will perform a U-turn to join the A78 westbound.  
     


    Tuesday 17th March and Wednesday 18th March 2026:  

     

  • Overnight closure of the A78 northbound on-slip road. 
  • Traffic will be directed to U-turn at Eglinton Interchange to join the A78 southbound and at Warrix Interchange will perform a further U-turn to join the A78 northbound carriageway.  


    Thursday 19th March and Friday 20th March 2026:  
     

  • Overnight lane two closures on both the A78 eastbound and westbound carriageways.  

Access for emergency service vehicles will be maintained throughout these works. 

Please note, all schemes are weather dependent and may be cancelled or rescheduled if weather conditions are not favourable. 

This scheme will benefit vehicles using this route each day, by providing data to inform the development of a future bridge refurbishment scheme in this area.
