A720 Edinburgh City Bypass At Three Locations | Overnight Resurfacing
UPDATE (28/05/2026): There will now be no access to the A7 Old Dalkeith Road from Sheriffhall Roundabout on the nights of Tuesday 2, Wednesday 3, and Thursday 4 June between 20:30 and 06:00, in addition to the previously announced closure of the A720 eastbound approach to Sheriffhall.
A diversion route onto the A7 Old Dalkeith Road will be signposted from Sheriffhall Roundabout via the A6106 Millerhill Road and Shawfair Spine Road, adding approximately 1.1 miles and 2 minutes to affected journeys.
A three-week programme of overnight works to renew the road surface on three sections of the A720 Edinburgh City Bypass is set to commence on Monday 25 May.
Transport Scotland’s operating company BEAR Scotland will carry out the works, with overnight slip road and carriageway closures in place for the safety of motorists and the workforce.
25-27 May: The slip road onto the A720 westbound at Lasswade Junction will be fully closed from 20:30 until 06:00 each night.
A diversion route for traffic wishing to join the A720 westbound will be signposted via Lasswade Road and Lang Loan to Straiton Junction. This will add approximately 0.5 miles and 4 minutes to affected journeys.
Please note that this diversion route is unsuitable for HGVs due to a low railway bridge on Lasswade Road – a separate diversion route for HGVs will be signposted via the A768 Wadingburn Road, the B702 Clerk Street and the A701 Straiton Road. This will add approximately 0.2 miles and 4 minutes to affected journeys.
28-29 May, 1-5 June and 8-9 June: The eastbound carriageway of the A720 will be fully closed between Gilmerton Junction and Sheriffhall Roundabout from 20:30 until 06:00 each night.
A diversion route will be signposted via the A772 and A7, adding approximately 0.4 miles and 4 minutes to affected routes.
10-12 June: The westbound carriageway of the A720 will be fully closed between Baberton Junction and Hermiston Gait from 20:30 until 06:00 each night.
A diversion route will be signposted from Baberton Junction to the Calder westbound on-slip, via Baberton Mains View, the B701 and A71. From the Calder westbound on-slip, traffic can either merge onto the M8 or rejoin the A720 towards Gogar Roundabout. This diversion will add approximately 2.9 miles and 7 minutes to affected journeys.
Consultation has taken place with relevant stakeholders in advance of these works to make them aware of the traffic management arrangements and to minimise any inconvenience.
Tommy Deans, BEAR Scotland’s South East Network Manager, said: “These surfacing improvements on the A720 trunk road will address and repair defects in the road surface such as potholes and cracks, creating safer and smoother journeys for motorists.
“It is essential for safety that we close the carriageway during these works, however we’ve scheduled them to be carried out during overnight hours to minimise any disruption.
“We thank road users in advance for their patience while our teams carry out these improvements.”
