A720 Eastbound at Straiton | Carriageway Investigation Works

A720 (Edinburgh City Bypass) Eastbound at Straiton
15th of July 2026, 8:30pm to 18th of July 2026, 6:00am

A three-night programme of overnight works will be undertaken at A720 Straiton Junction on the eastbound main carriageway and slip roads, beginning Wednesday 15 July 2026.

Transport Scotland’s operating company BEAR Scotland will carry out the investigative works to assess the condition of the carriageway, in advance of future resurfacing.

For the safety of motorists and the workforce, the following overnight slip road and lane closures will be in place:

15 July: The A720 Straiton eastbound off slip will be fully closed from 20:30 until 06:00.

A diversion route for traffic wishing to exit at Straiton Junction eastbound will be signposted via A720 eastbound, Lasswade eastbound off slip, Lasswade westbound on slip, A720 westbound and Straiton westbound off slip. This diversion will add approximately 2.3 miles and 3 minutes to affected journeys.

16-17 July: Lane closures will be in place on the A720 mainline East of Straiton eastbound between 20:30 and 06:00 on both nights, with A720 Straiton eastbound on slip being fully closed on Friday 17 July. The working hours will be 20:30 to 06:00 on both nights.

17 July: A diversion route will be in place for traffic wishing to join the A720 eastbound from the westbound Straiton on slip, via Straiton Junction, A720 westbound, Lothianburn westbound off slip, and using Lothian eastbound on slip to join the A720 eastbound. This diversion will add approximately 3.7 miles and 4 minutes to affected journeys.

Consultation has taken place with relevant stakeholders in advance of these works to make them aware of the traffic management arrangements and to minimise any inconvenience.

Tommy Deans, BEAR Scotland’s Southeast Network Manager, said: “It is essential for the safety of the workforce that we close the carriageway during these works, however, we’ve scheduled this during overnight hours to minimise any disruption.”

“We thank motorists in advance for their patience while our teams carry out these investigation works.”
