UPDATE (05/11/2025): Two additional shifts on the nights of Monday 10 and Tuesday 11 November will be required on the A68 at Carter Bar to complete road marking and studding works. The same diversion and convoy system will be in place as previously.

UPDATE  (03/10/2025): Due to adverse weather forecast, these works on the A68 will now commence on Tuesday 7 October. All other details remain the same.

The A68 at Carter Bar will be closed for overnight resurfacing works on Tuesday to Friday nights from 7 to 23 October.

Transport Scotland’s operating company BEAR Scotland will carry out the works between 19:30 and 06:00 each night.

During these hours, a signed diversion route will be in place between the A68/A6088 junction and Bonjedward, via the A6088 and A698. This will add approximately 15 minutes and 9.7 miles to affected journeys.

On the nights of 6 and 7 October, the same diversion route will be used to allow A68 traffic to bypass works at Townfoot Bridge in Jedburgh, which will be closed between 20:30 and 06:00.

During the final week of works, a convoy traffic management system will also be in place on the A68 from the English border to the A6088 junction.

The northbound layby at Carter Bar will be closed while works take place.

Tommy Deans, BEAR Scotland’s South East Network Manager, said: “These resurfacing improvements will result in safer and smoother journeys for motorists using the A68 at this location.

“We understand that road closures can be disruptive and so we’ve planned these works to take place overnight to minimise their impact.

“We thank road users and the local community for their patience while these essential works are completed.”

All work is weather dependent and subject to postponement in the event of adverse conditions.
