A1 North of Cockburnspath and Innerwick Junction | Resurfacing Works

30th of September 2025, 7:30pm to 6th of October 2025, 6:00am

The A1 is set to benefit from an improved road surface, with resurfacing north of Cockburnspath to be undertaken on 30 September, and then on 3 and 6 October. The works on the northbound carriageway north of Innerwick Junction set to take place on the nights of 1 and 2 October.

These works will see Transport Scotland’s operating company BEAR Scotland resurface approximately 0.8 kilometres of carriageway on the A1.

For safety during the works, a section of the A1 north of Cockburnspath will be under convoy control from 19:30 until 06:00 on the night of Tuesday 30 September, Friday 3 October and Monday 6 October.

The northbound carriageway of the A1 north of Innerwick Junction will then be closed between 19:30 and 06:00 on the nights of Wednesday 1 and Thursday 2 October.

During these closures, a signed diversion route for northbound traffic will be in place between Berwick Upon Tweed and the A720 Edinburgh City Bypass. Traffic will be diverted off the A1 onto the A6105 towards Duns, then onto the A697 at Greenlaw, before joining the A68 at Carfraemill Roundabout and following it north to Old Craighall Roundabout on the A720. This diversion will add approximately 4.7 miles and 15 minutes to affected journeys. Southbound traffic will remain unaffected.

Emergency services will be given access through the works at all times and local access for residents within the closure points will be maintained when it is safe to pass through the work area.

Emergency services and other relevant stakeholders have been consulted in advance to make them aware of the plans.

Tommy Deans, BEAR Scotland’s South East Network Manager, said: “These resurfacing improvements will result in smoother and safer journeys for motorists using these sections of the A1.

“We’ve scheduled the works at night to minimise disruption, however if you need to travel on the A1 northbound on the nights of 1 or 2 October, our advice is to plan ahead and allow extra time for the diversion.”
