M90 Queensferry Crossing | Overnight Maintenance
BEAR Scotland, on behalf of Transport Scotland, is set to carry out a series of overnight carriageway closures on the M90, to allow the replacement of overhead gantry signage at the central and south towers of the Queensferry Crossing.
Additionally, a practice deployment of the Queensferry Crossing automated diversion system will direct motorway traffic over the Forth Road Bridge.
On the nights of Friday 24 April between 10pm and 7am and Sunday 26 April between 10pm and 5am, the southbound carriageway of the M90 will be closed between Junction 1B Ferrytoll and Junction 1A Queensferry, to allow the replacement of gantry signage to be completed. Southbound traffic will be diverted from Junction 1B Ferrytoll onto the A9000 Forth Road Bridge, exiting via Echline Junction and heading west on the A904 to rejoin the M90 at Junction 1A Queensferry.
On the night of Saturday 25 April between 10pm and 8am, a full practice deployment of the automated diversion system will be undertaken to ensure all elements are in operation. Traffic in both directions on the M90 will be diverted over the Forth Road Bridge.
These closures will also allow additional works to be completed on the bridge, minimising the need for future disruption:
- Refreshing of white lines on the main carriageway and replacement of missing road studs
- Inspections of bridge elements including the wind louvres, parapets, carriageway surfacing and overhead gantries
- Removal of old architectural lighting from central tower
- Maintenance of the low-level bollard lighting
David Bishop, BEAR Scotland’s South East Bridges Manager, said: “The automated barrier system on the M90 significantly reduces the time it takes to open a diversion via the Forth Road Bridge, should the Queensferry Crossing need to close for any reason.
“These overnight closures will allow us carry out essential maintenance works, inspections on the Queensferry Crossing and to test the automated diversion system to identify and address any issues so that it is ready to be used if required.
“It is important that road users comply with red X signs above the carriageway when these appear, as the diversion route cannot be opened until traffic on the motorway has stopped.
“If there are red X signs above all lanes, you must come to a stop.”
