A726 Queensway | SGN Gas Network Upgrades
Gas network company SGN is investing £1.3m to upgrade the gas network in Queensway, East Kilbride, to ensure local homes and businesses continue to receive a safe and reliable gas supply.
The project involves replacing cast iron mains, reaching the end of their useful lives, with new polyethylene pipe. This will help ensure local homes and businesses continue to receive a safe and reliable gas supply long into the future.
Following close consultation with Transport Scotland and Amey, our work will start on April 7th 2026 and last until approximately 3rd September 2026.
SGN engineers will be replacing 2.3km of gas main along Queensway, from the BP garage up to the roundabout where Queensway meets The Murray Road. The old main will be replaced with new polyethylene pipe which has a lifespan of around 80 years.
During SGN’s project, Amey will also install a cycle lane along sections of Queensway once SGN’s work is complete. By coordinating the projects, the organisations will significantly reduce disruption for road users and residents. This approach means the road will only need to be opened once, avoiding the disruption that would have been caused by two separate projects digging up the road at different times.
SGN’s project will be carried out in three phases in 2026 and a fourth phase in 2027 to limit disruption as much as possible. A 30mph speed limit will be in force in the areas SGN will be working.
Phase 1
From 7th April, engineers will be working in Queensway, from the BP Garage up to the bus stop at Falkland Drive. One lane will be closed eastbound for everyone’s safety.
Phase 2
From approximately 28th May, work will be extended eastbound along Queensway to the East Kilbride Shopping Centre. During this phase, one lane in Queensway will be closed eastbound. Righead Roundabout will also be down to one lane from all directions.
Phase 3
From approximately 20th July, work will extend further eastbound along Queensway, up to the roundabout that meets The Murray Road. During this phase one lane on the Queensway will be closed eastbound and Righead Roundabout will remain one lane from all directions.
Phase 4
We will return in May 2027 to complete from The Murray Roundabout to 200m North of Birniehill Roundabout with lane closures in place.
As we finish each of the phases, Amey will come in to complete the restoration of the surfaces where we’ve been digging, so that a new cycle lane can be installed along Queensway between Righead Roundabout and the BP garage. Once the cycle lane is complete, lane restrictions from Phase 1 will be removed.
SGN spokesperson Waseem Hanif said: “We’ve worked closely with Transport Scotland and Amey in planning this work to ensure a co-ordinated approach and to limit disruption during our essential project. ”
“We know this is a busy route and we anticipate delays, so please plan ahead. We would like to thank everyone affected for your patience, understanding and support as we work to improve the energy infrastructure in East Kilbride.”
