Traffic Scotland continue to support Keep Scotland Beautiful’s ongoing litter campaign ‘Spring Clean Scotland’ to help raise awareness and spread the word about the importance of tidying up and keeping Scotland’s roads and countryside litter free.

From the 15th March to the 28th April, Spring Clean Scotland 2024 is taking place ahead of the summer months to encourage the public to clean up their local areas and bin their litter. You can find out more about the clean-up and how to take part on the Keep Scotland Beautiful website

Clean Up Scotland- Spring Clean

Litter ruins our beautiful landscape for locals and tourists. Not only is it harmful to the environment but is also difficult and expensive to clean up. It creates a negative impression of our country and landscapes. 50 tonnes of litter is abandoned on Scotland's roadsides each month and 82.8% of motorways and A roads are recorded to have a presence of litter.

We’ve put together some tips on how you can help keep Scotland beautiful and litter free:

  • Never throw litter out of the car window. It’s not only messy, but it can also be dangerous for other road users if they swerve to avoid, or the litter hits their windscreen.
  • If the bin at the roadside is full, take your litter home and dispose of it there.
  • Don’t throw cigarette butts out of moving vehicles/or at the roadside. They’re bad for the environment and a fire hazard.

Taking your own litter home prevents roadworkers lives being put at risk to keep the roadsides clear and helps protect the environment and wildlife. The simple solution is: Give your litter a lift, take it home!
