Major Water Main Investment along Main Ayrshire Route (A78)
UPDATE (01/05): Works will now be completed by 9th November 2024.
Scottish Water is investing nearly £2million to upgrade the water supply network along the North Ayrshire coast.
Work will begin on Tuesday 7 May 2024 to install nearly two miles of pipework along the route of the A78 from Wemyss Bay towards Skelmorlie.
Georgina Reid, Scottish Water’s regional affairs manager in the west said: “The existing 6-inch cast-iron water main is in poor condition and prone to bursting.
“This upgrade is vital to ensure customers continue to enjoy great tasting water from a resilient and reliable water supply.”
Work on the 11-month project will be carried out between 8am and 5pm and will see a convoy system deployed to manage traffic during these hours. Temporary traffic lights will be in operation overnight.
Pipe installation on the A78 will be completed in November 2024 with the remainder being carried out in nearby streets and on private land.
Georgina added: “The A78 is a key route for communities in Inverclyde and North Ayrshire and we are acutely aware of the impact the works could have.
“We will be working closely with partner agencies to raise awareness of these much-needed works and will do all we can to help minimise any disruption for road users.
Road closures will be required on Castle Road and Meigle Road towards the end of the works (November 2024 and February 2025) for approximately two weeks.
