UPDATE (15/12/22): The completion date for repair works on the A76 northbound carriageway at Howford Bridge has been revised and repairs are now scheduled to complete on Friday 23rd December 2022. The sub-surface drainage layer could not be installed as programmed due to adverse weather. The low temperatures we are currently experiencing across South-West Scotland do not allow for the successful laying of road treatment materials. Please note, repair work to the southbound carriageway will commence in early 2023. We thank road users for their patience while this essential maintenance is underway.

Amey, on behalf of Transport Scotland as part of the Network Management Contract for the South-West Trunk Road Unit, are undertaking essential repairs on the A76 at Howford Bridge, 1.5 miles south of Mauchline. Drainage investigations have concluded, and permanent repair work has commenced on the northbound carriageway. Traffic management will be in place on a continuous 24/7 basis.

Please note, the second phase of repairs to the southbound carriageway will take place in early 2023 with full details to be communicated in due course.

Drainage issues have been identified on the bridge. Investigations have been undertaken along the length of the bridge deck. The findings from these investigations have informed the permanent repair programme, which on completion, will benefit around 8,623 vehicles using this route each day.

Repair work will be carried out using a northbound single lane closure at Howford Bridge, which will be in effect 24/7 under temporary traffic signals installed at this location.

Angus Bruce, Amey Bridge Manager for the South-West Trunk Road Network, said: “A bridge inspection identified that excess water has been pooling on the bridge, resulting in damage to the carriageway. Our intention is to develop a drainage solution, which will ensure that excess water is being safely directed away from the bridge deck and that any water that does land on the bridge can be dealt with by the existing bridge drainage and waterproofing system.

“While this repair scheme is developed for this structure, temporary traffic lights will remain in place on the A76 Howford Bridge to ensure the continued safety of road operatives and the travelling public. We thank road users for their patience and understanding while this essential maintenance takes place.”

Access for emergency service vehicles will be maintained throughout these works.

Our operatives will follow strict physical distancing and hygiene protocols throughout the programme, in line with the Scottish Government’s COVID-19 guidance.
