Active Travel Improvements A9 North Kessock

Active travel and road safety improvements on the A9 between the Kessock Bridge and North Kessock Junction are set to get underway from Sunday 20 November.

The project will involve improvements to the existing, uncontrolled pedestrian and cycle crossing points to improve their safety and accessibility, as well as bringing them in line with current design standards. It will also include upgrades to the central reservation safety barriers and road lighting.

The improvement works are scheduled to begin on Sunday 20 November for nine weeks, with no works over the two-week festive period. To minimise delays and disruption for road users, lane restrictions will be limited to night time, between 7pm and 6am.  All works will be complete by 22 January, subject to weather.

To ensure the safety of roadworkers and road users, single fast lane closures will be in place on both the A9 northbound and southbound carriageways each night. The existing pedestrian and cycle crossing points will also be closed during the works with diversions in place via Point Road, North Kessock. The existing National Cycle Route 1 path adjacent to the A9 northbound will also require to be closed for a period whilst the works take place.  Non-motorised users will be diverted to use the alternative National Cycle Route 1 path through North Kessock.

A further phase of works is also proposed to widen the existing shared use path in the northbound verge that links the crossing points in early 2023.

“These works are part an ongoing commitment to improve safety for all road users on the A9 and will see improvements to the existing, non-motorised user links in the area, as well as improving safety for main line, motorised users.

“This phase of the project will see improvements to the central reservation crossing points between the Kessock Bridge and the North Kessock Junction, which will also include upgrades to the existing safety barriers and street lighting. These upgrades will help to improve and promote active travel routes.“The traffic management is essential to keep roadworkers and road users safe during this project as our teams will be working in the central reservation area, however we will do all we can to complete the project as quickly and as safely as possible.

“We encourage road users to plan their journey in advance by checking the Traffic Scotland website for up to date traffic information and allow some extra time to reach their destination.”
