A8 Glasgow and Edinburgh Road | Five Overnight Closures

Road users are advised that the A8(M) Glasgow & Edinburgh Road and A8 Coatbridge Road at Swinton roundabout between Baillieston Cross (Morrisons) and Baillieston roundabout (M73 & M8) will be closed for five overnights, commencing Monday 11 November 2024, for essential road surfacing works to Swinton roundabout. The closures have been scheduled overnight to minimise disruption to traffic and are required to ensure road user and road worker safety.
The works will be undertaken in two phases as follows:
Phase 1:
The A8(M) eastbound and westbound carriageway of Glasgow & Edinburgh Road at Swinton roundabout between Baillieston Cross and Baillieston roundabout will be closed for three nights, from 8pm on the days below to 6am the following day:
· Monday 11 November, Tuesday 12 November & Thursday 14 November 2024 (3 nights)
In addition, the A89 westbound carriageway of Coatbridge Road between Bargeddie roundabout (A8) and Swinton roundabout will also be closed.
· As a result, there will be no direct access to Swinton and Baillieston form the M8 & M73 at Baillieston Interchange or from the Bargeddie area.
Local access to Rhindhouse Road will be provided via diversion routes 1 or 2 below, to A8 eastbound Edinburgh Road to Baillieston Cross (Morrisons).
Signed diversion routes will be in place as follows:
Diversion 1 – For access to Baillieston and Glasgow East/Bargeddie/Coatbridge from the M73 & M8 at Baillieston Interchange via M73 southbound Junction 2 Baillieston on slip road, M73 Southbound Link Road to M74 northbound Junction 1 Maryville, continue M74 northbound to Junction 2A Cambuslang (Fullarton
roundabout), take 3rd exit for A74 eastbound London Road, B7058 Mount Vernon Avenue, A89 Glasgow Road & Main Street Baillieston, A8 eastbound Edinburgh Road for Swinton roundabout and follow permanent signage for A8 (E) & A89 Coatbridge.
Diversion 2 – For Motorway Traffic and access to M73 (N) & (S)/Swinton/Baillieston & Glasgow East from A8 westbound or A89 westbound Coatbridge Road, Bargeddie, Motorway Traffic via A8 eastbound to Junction 7 Eurocentral off slip road to Eurocentral Junction North roundabout, take 3rd exit across overbridge to Eurocentral Junction South roundabout, take 4th exit for M8 westbound Junction 7 Eurocentral Junction on slip road, continue M8 westbound to Junction 8 Baillieston for access to M73 (North) & (South). For Swinton/Baillieston/Glasgow East continue M8 westbound to Junction 10 Easterhouse (Glasgow Fort) off slip road, Bartiebeith Road, A8 eastbound Edinburgh Road for Baillieston & Swinton.
For non-motorway traffic, via A89 eastbound Coatbridge Road, A752 Cuilhill Road, A752 Gartcosh Road, Lochend Road, Westerhouse Road, Easterhouse Road, A8 eastbound Edinburgh Road for Swinton & Baillieston or follow permanent signage for Glasgow East. To avoid low bridge on A752 Cuilhill Road Bargeddie (4.7m; 15’3’’ inches), continue A89 eastbound Coatbridge Road, A89 Bank Street, Blair Road, Townhead Road, A752 Gartcosh Road (south), Lochend Road, Westerhouse Road, Easterhouse Road, A8 eastbound Edinburgh Road to Baillieston & Swinton.
Phase 2:
The A8 eastbound carriageway at Swinton roundabout between Baillieston Cross (Morrisons) and Bargeddie roundabout (A89 Coatbridge Road) will be closed for two nights, from 8pm on the days below to 6am the following day:
· Wednesday 13 November and Friday 15 November 2024 (2 nights)
· As a result, there will be no direct access from Baillieston to M73/M8 at Baillieston Interchange or direct access to Bargeddie/A89 Coatbridge Rd/A8 eastbound for Edinburgh.
In addition, Rhindhouse Road will also be closed. Local access to Rhindhouse Road will be via the A8 eastbound Edinburgh Road, Baillieston Cross (Morrisons), where traffic management operatives will provide escorted access.
A signed diversion routes will be in place as follows:
Diversion 1 – For Motorway Traffic and access to M73 & M8 at Baillieston Interchange from A8 eastbound at Baillieston Cross (Morrisons) via A89 Main Street & Glasgow Road Baillieston, B7058 Mount Vernon Avenue, A74 London Road (West), M74 southbound Junction 2A Cambuslang (Fullarton Road) on slip road, M74 southbound Link Road to M73 northbound at Junction 4 Maryville, M73 northbound for Stirling & North or Junction 2 Baillieston off slip to Baillieston roundabout for M8 eastbound Junction 8 Baillieston on slip road for Edinburgh & East.
Diversion 2 – For Non-motorway Traffic and access to A8 eastbound Edinburgh/Eurocentral & A89 westbound Bargeddie/Coatbridge from A8 eastbound Edinburgh Road via A8 westbound Edinburgh Road, Easterhouse Road, Westerhouse Road, Lochend Road, A752 Gartcosh Road (South), A752 Cuilhill Road to Bargeddie, take 1st exit at roundabout for A89 Coatbridge Road (East) for Coatbridge or 3rd exit at roundabout for A89 Coatbridge Road (West) and follow permanent signage for A8 eastbound Edinburgh or M73/M8 at Baillieston roundabout. To avoid low bridge on A752 Cuilhill Road Bargeddie (4.7m; 15’3’’ inches), turn left from Lochend Road to A752 Gartcosh Road (North), Townhead Road Coatbridge, Blair Road, A89 Bank Street and continue A89 eastbound Bank Street for Coatbridge central or A89 westbound Coatbridge Road for Bargeddie.
These closures are required to ensure road user and road worker safety whilst essential road surfacing of Swinton roundabout is undertaken. Works have been scheduled overnight to minimise disruption to road users. The road will reopen at 6am each morning.
Local diversion routes will also be in place during the closures.
Access for emergency vehicles will be maintained at all times.
The works will be carried out by Scottish Road Partnership on behalf of Transport Scotland to maintain the integrity and safety of this route. The works have been planned in consultation with Transport Scotland, North Lanarkshire Council, Glasgow City Council and the emergency services.
Please note, all works are weather dependent and may be cancelled or rescheduled if weather conditions are not favourable.
