A725 Northbound and Southbound Carriageways at Shawhead Junction | Cyclic Maintenance and Road Patching Works

Road users are advised that the A725 north and southbound carriageways of Shawhead Junction between Kirkshaws Road Coatbridge and North Road Bellshill,  will be totally closed for one overnight on Monday 01 December 2025, from 8pm to 6am, to carry out road surface repairs and cyclic maintenance works.

The closures have been scheduled overnight to minimise disruption to traffic and are required to ensure road user and road worker safety.

As a result, the following slip roads will also be closed:

•    A8 eastbound Shawhead Junction off slip road to A725 North & South.
•    A8 eastbound Shawhead Junction on slip road from A725 (to Edinburgh)
•    A8 westbound Shawhead Junction off slip road to A725 North & South.

Please note: The A8 westbound Shawhead Junction on slip road (for Glasgow) will remain open but only accessible via A725 northbound carriageway from the M74 Raith, Orbiston Junction, Bellziehill Junction & Strathclyde Business Park areas.

Signed diversion routes will be in place as follows:

Diversion 1: For A725 southbound closure at Kirkshaws Road via A725 northbound Whifflet Street, Dundyvan Road, A89 Bank Street (West), A89 Glasgow Road, A89 Coatbridge Road to Bargeddie roundabout, take 1st exit for A752 Langmuir Road, continue A752 underneath A8 overbridge, continue A752 Aitkenhead Road, C7001 Old Edinburgh Road (East), continue Old Edinburgh Road to A725 Bellziehill Junction roundabout and follow permanent signage. 
(The A725 southbound closure at Shawhead Junction will be pre-signed early at A725 Coatbank Street Coatbridge advising southbound drivers of closure ahead and to use diversion via Dundyvan Road).

Diversion 2: For A725 northbound closure at North Road via A8 westbound Shawhead Junction on slip road, continue A8 westbound to Bargeddie Junction (Showcase) off slip road, take 2nd exit at mini roundabout for A752 Langmuir Road, continue A752 Langmuir Road, A89 Coatbridge Road (East), A89 Glasgow Road Coatbridge, A89 Bank Street, Dundyvan Road, returning to A725 at Whifflet Street and follow permanent signage.

Diversion 3: For A8 eastbound traffic to A725 (North) and Coatbridge continue A8 eastbound to Carnbroe Junction off slip road, Carnbroe Road, Sweethill terrace, Park Place, Paddock Street Coatbridge, Sykeside Street, Calder Street, return to A725 at Whifflet Street and follow permanent signage.

Diversion 4: For A8 eastbound traffic at Shawhead Junction off slip road to A725 (South) for Bellshill (M74/East Kilbride/Carlisle) continue A8 eastbound to Eurocentral North roundabout, take 3rd exit and cross overbridge to Eurocentral South roundabout, take 3rd exit for A8 westbound and continue A8 westbound, underneath A725 Shawhead overbridge and continue A8 westbound to Bargeddie Junction (Showcase) off slip road, take 1st exit at mini-roundabout for A752 Aitkenhead Road, C7001 Old Edinburgh Road (East), continue C7001 New Edinburgh Road to A725 Bellziehill Junction roundabout and follow permanent signage.

Diversion 5: For A8 westbound traffic for Shawhead Junction off slip road to A725 (North & South) for Coatbridge, Bellshill (M74/East Kilbride/Carlisle) continue A8 westbound to Bargeddie Junction (Showcase) off slip road, For Bellshill/M74/East Kilbride take 1st exit at mini roundabout for A752 Aitkenhead Road, Old Edinburgh Road (East), continue New Edinburgh Road to A725 Bellziehill Junction roundabout and follow permanent signage. Or alternatively for Coatbridge from A8 westbound Bargeddie Junction off slip, take 2nd exit at mini roundabout, A752 Langmuir Road, A89 Coatbridge Road (East), A89 Glasgow Road Coatbridge, A89 Bank Street, Dundyvan Road and return to A725 Whifflet Street and follow permanent signage.  

Diversion 6: For B7070 North Road Bellshill closure via North Road (South), Gartcosh Walk to Bellziehill roundabout, take 3rd exit for C7001 Old Edinburgh Road, A752 Aitkenhead Road, A752 Langmuir Road, A89 Coatbridge Road (East), A89 Glasgow Road Coatbridge, A89 Bank Street, Dundyvan Road returning to A725 Whifflet Street and follow permanent signage.

(The B7070 North Road Bellshill will be pre-signed early at Hattonrigg Road roundabout, Bellshill, advising northbound drivers of closure at North Road  to A725 ahead and to use diversion via Gartcosh Walk, Viewpark & Bargeddie for Coatbridge).  

Local diversion signs will also be in place.

The diversion route will add an estimated 4.6 miles and 10 minutes to affected journeys on the A725 north and southbound carriageways via local roads.  

The closures are required to ensure road user and road worker safety whilst road surface repairs and cyclic maintenance works is undertaken and have been scheduled overnight to minimise disruption to traffic. The road will reopen at 6am the following morning.

Access for emergency service vehicles will be maintained. 
Road users are encouraged to plan ahead and check Traffic Scotland’s website prior to travelling to check their route. 
The works will be carried out by Scottish Road Partnership on behalf of Transport Scotland to maintain the integrity and safety of this route. The works have been planned in consultation with Transport Scotland, North Lanarkshire Council and the emergency services.
Please note, all works are weather dependent and may be cancelled or rescheduled if weather conditions are not favourable.
